DescriptionPurpose of Position:Operate and maintain all lift station within the City of Oxford wastewater collection system.Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesSupervision ReceivedThe immediate supervisor for this position is the Lift Station Superintendent. Supervision ExercisedNoneESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSMaintain all pump stationsCheck pump stations to make sure that they are working properlyCoordinate repair efforts or make minor repairs, as necessaryRebuild pumps and controlsPlump lift stations as requiredAssist employees, as neededPurchase departmental suppliesKeep inventory of suppliesOrder suppliesReceive suppliesInspect and supervise constructionMake sure work is done in accordance to City specificationsMake sure quality of material meets City specificationsPerform necessary tests on lift station and force mains before accepted by cityPerform Other Duties as DirectedKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge:Water mechanics and laying pipesPumps, compressors, and generatorsElectrical control systemsProcedures for testing pump stations and force mainsEPA standards for governing waste waterSewer controlProper grammar and proper use of English in speaking and writingOSHA standards and regulations concerning employee safetyFederal and state statutes concerning the work of the departmentMathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplicationGeneral functions and operations of municipal governmentSkills and Abilities:Maintain accurate recordsPerform routine lubrication and maintenance proceduresEPA standards and regulations governing wastewaterAbility to rebuild pumps and motorsAbility to rebuild control systems, when necessaryWork as a team member with other employeesMake decisions within specified time restraintsCommunicate effectively with residents, elected officials, other City employees, contractors, etc., both orally and writtenMaintain confidentialityWork autonomously when necessaryHandle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptionsDeal with others in a professional mannerMaintain professional composure in heated situationsFollow departmental and City proceduresRequirementsSpecial RequirementsThe person in this position must have a valid driver's license and must be able to get CDL Class B and Tanker End. within one year. In addition, a high school diploma or its equivalent is required. At least five years of experience in mechanical construction, plumbing, and electricity is required. Tools and Equipment UsedHand tools (shovels, saws, etc.)Operate departmental equipment (i.e., backhoe, hydraulic sewer cleaner, air hammer, and dump truck)Heavy equipment (dozer, etc.)Physical DemandsPhysical work involved with this position includes, but is not limited to, lifting, bending, climbing, and withstanding extreme temperatures.Work EnvironmentThe Lift Station Operator works regular hours year-round, and always does overtime and night work when the workload demands it. There is no shift work for this position. The person in this position is always on call. 10% of the work for this position is indoors, and 90% is outdoors and requires work done in all types of weather conditions. The position has accountability for monetary, fiscal, safety and legal issues for which this position is accountable. There is exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials on a daily basis. This exposure includes, but is not limited to electricity, sewer waste and solvents.
