Summary:The Computer Science department at Skidmore College is looking for a Linux Systems Administrator or Senior Linux Systems Administrator. The individual contributor position manages the Linux computing infrastructure the Computer Science Department uses for instruction and research. This involves ensuring the continued operation of current servers, client machines, and associated infrastructure. This position also plans for future computing needs of the department based on the evolving industry trends and evolving needs of the department.This is a full-time, 12-month position. Most of the work is done during typical business hours. However, the position must occasionally be available outside of business hours to conduct system maintenance and to address urgent system issues.Responsibilities include but are not limited to:Manage the Linux servers, client workstations, and user accounts.Provide after-hours support for critical system alerts.Support computer applications used in the Computer Science curriculum.Prioritize system security to ensure data confidentiality, integrity, and availability.Perform capacity and replacement planning.Plan and implement changes to move the server infrastructure forward.Plan, build, and maintain Linux computing clusters for research.Supervise student workers.Ability to lift/move 40 pounds.Education: Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field.Preferred Experience for Linux Systems Administrator:6 months of experience managing Linux systems, preferably Red Hat or Fedora, in a networked environment, including experience as part of an academic program.6 months experience installing and maintaining client and server hardware, including ancillary equipment such as switches and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).Proven ability for self-directed learning and motivation to learn about Linux System Administration on the job.Familiar with Bash or other shell scripting language, and Python.Familiar with C++, Java, and Perl programming languages.Strong communication, interpersonal, decision making, time management, and organizational skills.Ability to engage with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and outside vendors (gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, etc.) in the context of higher educationPreferred Experience for Senior Linux Systems Administrator:In addition to experience listed above for Linux Systems Administrator.5 years of experience with Linux administrationA comprehensive understanding of the Linux operating system, Linux Administration tools, and securing Linux-based infrastructures.Extensive knowledge of computing systems, including server virtualization, network design, and information security.Hands-on skills with hardware installation, configuration, and management across servers, client systems, switches, and UPS.Fluent in programming in Bash or other shell scripting language, and in Python.Ability to install and configure standard development platform software (such as Visual Studio Code, Eclipse, and git) in a Linux environment.Excellent problem-solving and self-motivation abilities.Proven ability to absorb new technologies and keep up to date on current technologies.Managerial abilities for working with student assistants.Salary: $75,000 to $95,000Required Documents Needed to Apply:Online applicationCover letterResumeList of three referencesVisa sponsorship is not available for this position.EEO STATEMENTSkidmore College is committed to being an inclusive campus community and, as an Equal Opportunity Employer, does not discriminate in its hiring or employment practices on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, gender, age, national or ethnic origin, physical or mental disability, military or veteran status, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, predisposition or carrier status, domestic violence victim status, familial status, dating violence, or stalking, or any other category protected by applicable federal, state or local laws.Employment at Skidmore College is contingent upon an acceptable background check result.CREATIVE THOUGHT MATTERS.
