This is a part-time temporary position with the Department of University Housing. The primary purpose of this position is to lend assistance to skilled trade and maintenance workers with the installation, maintenance and repair of machinery, electrical and/or electronic components found within Housing facilities.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Basic computer skills to include proficiency with email correspondence.
3. Sufficient verbal communication skills needed to exchange effectively with supervisors, staff and residents.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
* Must be enrolled on at least a half-time basis at the University of Georgia when classes are in session (i.e., enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours for undergraduate and professional students during fall/spring semesters; enrolled in a minimum of five credit hours for graduate students during fall/spring semesters). Credit hour minimums during the summer terms and during the last semester before graduation may be different. Consult the University Housing Human Resources office for additional information.
* Must be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct and University Housing. Good standing is defined as not being found responsible for policy violations that would interfere with the ability to perform tasks typically assigned to student employees. Additionally, good standing means that the student employee has participated in the student conduct process if charged with any violations and completed any sanctions that may be assigned by the prescribed deadline.
* May not exceed 20 hours of work per week across all student staff positions if positions are held in multiple departments, except when classes are not in session and the student employee has prior permission from the supervisor. This includes online training, staff meetings and one-on-ones.
* May not exceed 6 consecutive hours of work per shift.
* Student employees are considered temporary employees. A temporary employee may be separated at any time for any reason without notice and either the employer or the employee can end the employment relationship. Such separation is not grievable or subject to appeal.
* The maintenance assistant will independently perform intermediate level maintenance tasks.
* Knowledge of standard concepts and practices of the maintenance field and be relied upon to plan and accomplish goals.
* Knowledge of workplace rules and guidelines; stay in compliance with UGA policies and procedures.
* Properly prioritize work load according to urgency.
* Communicate in a professional and consistent manner with a variety of individuals such as building service workers, residence hall staff, students/families and other maintenance workers.
Physical Demands
1. Climb stairs, ladders and scaffolds; may work from a ladder or scaffold.
2. Bend at the waist and the knees.
3. Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time.
4. Use hand tools and power tools.
5. Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.
6. Crawl to complete various tasks.
7. May occasionally perform work related duties outdoors, in hot or cold weather conditions.
8. Safely operate a UGA state vehicle as necessary.
