The North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is seeking applicants for a Maintenance Technician I with our Veterans Affairs Division. This position will perform a variety of support activities involved in burial operations for our Western Carolina Veterans State Cemetery located in Black Mountain, NC. This position is established to supervise as well as perform a variety of activities involved in facilities maintenance, equipment maintenance, burial operations, grounds maintenance and other work related and unique to the conduct of cemetery operations. This position will perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks involved in facilities maintenance which will include general electrical, plumbing, carpentry and and/or mechanical repairs. Other tasks may include scheduled maintenance on vehicles, tools and other equipment. Position will also be called upon to assist in burial operations, such as operating a backhoe to open and close grave sites as well as the burying and/or removing of caskets. Position will install headstones and grave markers and be responsible for grounds maintenance, which will include mowing and trimming lawn area. The position will be called upon to perform any other related and unique duties in the operations of a cemetery.
A normal 40 hours work week (8am-5pm) is associated with the position; however, workdays will vary due to cemetery requirements. The duties and responsibilities of this position will require some weekend, after hours and holiday work to allow for burials, required ceremonies or to accommodate cemetery operation hours. Other duties may be assigned. Position is located in Black Mountain, NC (Buncombe County).
Position will be performing manual labor in lifting medium to heavy items weighing up to 75 pounds on a daily basis. The work is preformed indoors as well as outdoors and in all kinds of extreme weather conditions. Employee is required to wear a State provided uniform and certain safety equipment as well as follow established safety regulations and procedures.
* Documented experience in one or more of the following trades (carpentry, cabinet making, roofing, painting, or other).
* Must have physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time
* Experience performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in facilities maintenance.
* Experience moving medium to heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds on a daily basis in a safe and efficient manner.
Management Preference:
* Previous maintenance mechanic work and to individuals with experience in cemetery operations, including general electrical and plumbing repairs as well as experience in operating a backhoe
* Experience with strong customer service skills when working with clients, veterans, co-workers and the general public
* Experience in cemetery operations, construction maintenance, landscape and/or grounds work

Necessary Special Qualification:
