JOB DESCRIPTION:

Performs routine tasks associated with maintenance, repair, installation and alteration of basic electrical, plumbing and mechanical jobs. Performs preventive, casualty and corrective maintenance on equipment; assembling, installing, and maintaining mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment; troubleshooting machinery and performing routine preventative maintenance. Also reading, interpreting, and following instructions and operation manuals. Maintaining a schedule for inspecting, servicing, and testing machinery. Cleaning, repairing and installing equipment and parts as needed. Operating a variety of hand and power tools. Maintaining a clean and organized work area. Complying with health and safety regulations. Performing general maintenance work on buildings as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs routine tasks associated with the maintenance, repair, installation and alteration of plumbing fixtures and equipment, such as unclogging toilets, sinks and drain lines and repairing or replacing faucets, shower heads, toilet seats and so forth.
  • Replaces defective bulbs, changes receptacles and switches, repairs small appliances, takes conductivity tests and performs other routine electrical repairs, alterations and maintenance.
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks such as repairing beds, bedside tables, adjusting door closets and fixing broken windows.
  • Lays tiles, repairs plaster, cuts openings in walls, repairs furniture and performs minor locksmith work and other routine and semi-complex tasks associated with the alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, floors, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens and furniture.
  • On a regular basis, is assigned responsibility for responding to emergency situations requiring immediate maintenance assistance; makes necessary repairs and/or notifies supervisor.
  • Assists higher classified personnel perform more skilled tasks associated with the maintenance, repair and alteration of buildings and mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment.
  • Additional duties as assigned by Supervisor or Department Head.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • HS Diploma or Equivalent.
  • New York State Driver's License.
  • Ability to read and write in order to understand equipment operating instructions and maintain logs and records of work performed and to interpret noncomplex blueprints and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Requires approximately one-year on the job experience. Trade or vocational school graduate preferred. Knowledge and ability to operate hand and power tools. Mechanical aptitude and ability.
  • Strong computer skills. Good troubleshooting skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods and to life objects weighing up to fifty pounds. Occasional exposure to excessive noise from machinery and to minor electrical shocks or burns from equipment. Physical dexterity.

  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
