As an operator, you will:
- Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway maintenance. Tasks include installing culvert pipes, grading gravel roads, hauling gravel and debris, rolling patching, and other manual labor duties needed to maintain Virginia's roads.
- Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar kettles, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc. For each piece of equipment operated, you will complete a pre-trip/post-trip inspection and maintain equipment for readiness.
- Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.
- Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road. During severe weather, you will prepare for, and operate equipment to remove snow and ice, along with working in other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Emergency response will require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper worksite protection. Safety is our number one focus, so you are encouraged to identify workplace safety hazards and make recommendations for improvements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience in roadway maintenance or construction or knowledge of materials, methods, and procedures used in roadway maintenance or construction.
- Experience in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, backhoes, etc.
- Able to read and follow oral and written instructions
- Able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds
- Skilled in using hand and power tools
- Valid driver's license required at hire. A Commercial Driver's License and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter.
Additional Considerations
- Current CDL (Class A or B) with appropriate endorsements.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
- Experience in emergency operations including snow removal, storm and accident response, and clean-up.
