The maintenance planner's primary role is to improve workforce productivity and quality by preemptively addressing potential delays through effective planning and coordination of parts, machine time, and manpower.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Act as the main contact between maintenance and plant departments, ensuring prompt and quality service.
  • Handle and review work orders, ensuring they are complete, clear, and properly authorized.
  • Verify the necessity of work orders and consult with relevant personnel as needed.
  • Collaborate with engineering on work orders requiring design input.
  • Plan maintenance work involving multiple crews, ensuring proper coordination.
  • Acquire necessary blueprints, drawings, and materials for work orders.
  • Prioritize safety in work planning.
  • Estimate job requirements, including labor, materials, and costs.
  • Maintain backlog files for work orders, organized by priority and readiness.
  • Verify the availability of parts and materials before scheduling jobs.
  • Develop maintenance schedules, balancing workload and available manpower.
  • Communicate with production and maintenance supervisors to coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Recommend equipment for preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ensure all necessary parts and tools are ready for scheduled maintenance.
  • Issue and review schedules and work orders with area supervisors.
  • Follow up on completed work orders and ensure proper documentation.
  • Promote energy conservation practices.
  • Coordinate with other planners on complex jobs.
  • Hold weekly meetings with production and maintenance supervisors to discuss upcoming maintenance needs.
  • Maintain a list of schedulable work orders for unscheduled equipment shutdowns.
  • Develop a file of standard work orders for recurring jobs.
  • Analyze labor and material use versus estimates to improve accuracy.
  • Assist in analyzing and reducing maintenance costs.
  • Keep the maintenance manager informed of critical situations.
  • Recommend system improvements.
  • Maintain records and prepare control reports.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the maintenance manager.

Qualifications

  • Technician-level experience or engineering education preferred.
  • Good understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Adequate craft knowledge to estimate man-hours and materials.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to negotiate maintenance needs.
  • Good administrative and mathematical skills; willingness to handle paperwork.
  • Proficient with personal computers and relational databases.
  • Good planning, organizational, and coordination skills; able to manage multiple jobs simultaneously.
  • Ability to provide clear instructions.
  • Able to read blueprints and shop drawings; sketching ability.
  • Understanding of work orders, priorities, and scheduling.
  • Commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to command respect within maintenance and operating organizations.
