MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I - DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

This is a Second Shift Position 2:00pm. - 10:30pm.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the general and/or specific direction of the Parks & Facilities Supervisor, Parks and Facilities Specialist, or their designee, the Maintenance Technician I performs routine housekeeping chores, cleaning, light maintenance duties, and related work. Assignments are received through written work orders or verbal instructions.

Employees in this position must adhere to their scheduled shifts, with potential changes in start and end times. This role involves working within the Parks Department, covering various locations, including Liberty Harbor Marina, James Clement Airport, Oak Ridge Cemetery, City Department of Public Works buildings, City Hall, or any other City-owned or managed properties.

ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Perform routine cleaning tasks such as dusting, mopping, sweeping, and vacuuming in all designated areas.

* Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and fixtures, ensuring a high standard of hygiene.

* Empty and clean trash and recycling bins, replace liners as needed, and dispose of waste appropriately.

* Wipe and disinfect high-touch surfaces such as door handles, light switches, and handrails to minimize the spread of germs.

* Clean windows, glass doors, and other transparent surfaces using appropriate cleaning agents for streak-free results.

* Restock and maintain supplies such as hand soap, paper towels, and toilet paper in restrooms and other designated areas.

* Sweep and mop hard floors, paying particular attention to entryways and high-traffic areas to maintain cleanliness and safety.

* Vacuum carpets and rugs thoroughly, removing dirt, debris, and allergens to ensure a clean and healthy indoor environment.

* Clean and disinfect kitchen areas, including sinks, countertops, appliances, and tables, to prevent contamination and ensure food safety.

* Perform special cleaning tasks as needed, such as spot-cleaning carpets, removing stains, or polishing metal fixtures.

* Maintain outdoor areas, including sweeping sidewalks, picking up litter, and ensuring trash receptacles are emptied and clean.

* Follow safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required when handling cleaning chemicals or operating equipment.

* Report any maintenance issues, damage, or safety hazards discovered during cleaning duties to the appropriate supervisor promptly.

* Adhere to cleaning schedules and complete assigned tasks within specified timeframes.

* Work independently or as part of a team to efficiently and effectively complete cleaning assignments.

* Assist with setting up and arranging furniture, equipment, and supplies for meetings, events, or other activities as requested.

* Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while interacting with building occupants, visitors, and colleagues.

* Respect and protect the privacy and confidentiality of individuals and sensitive information encountered during cleaning activities.

* Follow established procedures for securing facilities, including locking doors and activating alarm systems at the end of each shift.

* Clean public and non-public areas of assigned facilities.

* Perform light maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, fluorescent lamps, and filters as needed.

* Safely perform tasks requiring lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting motions, including working off ladders, to effectively complete assigned duties.

* Perform outdoor maintenance tasks as necessary to uphold the aesthetic appeal and cleanliness of the exterior spaces surrounding the facility. This includes but is not limited to, weeding, mowing lawns, trimming bushes, watering plants, picking up litter, cleaning up cigarette butts, and emptying cigarette butt containers.

* Inform the Supervisor of inventory needs; ensure a minimum two-week supply of cleaning supplies is maintained at all times. Report any deficiencies to the supervisor promptly.

* Snow shoveling and salt spreading activities as needed.

* Assist in the preparation of records, reports, and work orders

* Perform job duties with proper safety work methods and procedures.

* Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

* High school diploma or GED equivalent.

* A minimum of two (2) years' experience in custodial, building maintenance, or general labor.

* Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Michigan, accompanied by a clean driving record.

Knowledge of:

* The materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning operations and light maintenance.

* maintenance terminology.

* Occupational hazards and safety practices as it relates to this type of work.

Ability to:

* Ability to effectively interact with and, when necessary, assist the public.

* Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

* Maintain composure and exercise good judgement when answering demanding questions.

* Make operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.

* Establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees, contractors, and the public.

* Understand and carry out oral and written directions in an independent manner.

* Follow established safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.

* Must possess time management skills with the ability to work with numerous interruptions and work effectively under time constraints to meet deadlines.

* Must be willing and able to be on call during regular work week, including weekends, and to report for work after hours if needed.
