The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to roughly 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon areas. Our mission is to provide safe, sustainable water services for our customers while protecting public health and contributing to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of our communities. This position functions as the primary manual labor component of each two-man crew assigned to the Preventative Maintenance Program within the Sewer Maintenance Division. Crews within this program are tasked with cleaning sanitary sewer mains on a routine basis in order to prevent system blockages and maintain compliance with the Division's State issued Collections System permit. Staff assigned to this role assist a lead worker in the maintenance and operation of combination flush/vac equipment used to clean sewer structures by way of high-pressure water hoses and nozzles. Work Hours: Regular scheduled working hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. This position carries with it an on-call requirement after hours and on weekends/holidays on a rotating basis. which includes 8 hours of paid standby time per on-call week, plus the potential to earn overtime pay at 1.5 times the normal hourly rate for hours worked over 40. Work Location: This position will report to the Lake Woodard Annex, located at 3324 Lake Woodard Drive. Raleigh, NC 27604. Staff assigned to this role will provide functions critical to completion of the following tasks:
- Daily vehicle and equipment inspection
- Maintenance of assigned tools
- Assist with work zone setup and teardown
- Act as spotter to truck operator
- Assist with truck/supply room inventory
- Assist with all other work-related tasks

- Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks and performs semi-skilled general maintenance following established safety policies, procedures, applicable codes, and regulations. Examples of work performed include:
- Loading/unloading equipment
- Set up of combination jet/vac sewer cleaning truck
- Opening manhole covers and inserting cleaning nozzles into sewer pipes
- Sets up/tears down traffic control work zones and various safety tools such as trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and confined space equipment
- Responds in a crew to sanitary sewer backup, overflows, and odor call investigation and response. Sets up spilled wastewater containment sites, manually places gas powered pumps and hoses, cleans up solid debris from contaminated areas, and restore impacted sites
- Operates, maintains, inspects, cleans, and repairs or replaces equipment parts. Counts inventory of needed tools and supplies and oversees need for advanced equipment repairs
- Supports City of Raleigh emergency response in the event of inclement weather, such as debris, snow, and ice cleanup after severe storms

- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Working Conditions: Work is conducted in a crew setting primarily in an outdoors environment in close proximity to heavy equipment, vehicle traffic, open manholes, and open excavations. May involve entering areas with uneven or rough terrain to include creek beds, wetlands, or forested areas. Knowledge of:
