The City of La Verne invites motivated individuals to apply for part-time entry-level positions in the Public Works Department, working in the Streets and Parks divisions. This position offers up to 28 hours weekly, with a 4-day workweek which includes 3-day weekends (closed Fridays). Come work with an experienced team to care for our community's parks and sports fields, public streets, and community buildings. This listing is for part-time employment. Although future advancement to full-time employment is not guaranteed, City of La Verne typically hires full-time Maintenance Worker employees from the ranks of part-time Maintenance Worker employees. Recruitment Closing Date: Sunday, December 1, 2024Tentative Interview Date Upon Selection:Wednesday, December 11, 2024 Examples of DutiesDepending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled to skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of street facilities and related structures and projects.
  • Operate light to moderate construction equipment including, but not limited to: trucks, asphalt rollers, concrete saws, compressors, skip loaders, backhoes, tractors, trenching machines, jackhammers, power mowers, edgers and sprayers on routine assignments or on a training basis.
  • Repair and patch streets by hand sweeping surfaces, loading asphalt, raking and shoveling asphalt and operating an asphalt spreader.
  • Pour and finish concrete in conjunction with water service line installation and repair and with the installation and repair of curbs, gutters, sidewalks, etc.
  • Clean drainage ditches and catch basins as required.
  • Perform regular storm drain maintenance and emergency storm work. Repair, install and maintain traffic control devices.
  • Cut, fit, lay and repair water mains, clean and flush water mains and sewer Iines, repair mains, valves and hydrants.
  • Inspect, test and operate valves, fittings and related water distribution and sewer transmission equipment as assigned.
  • Perform repair of fire hydrants and flow test related equipment as assigned.
  • Participate in water system and sewer system maintenance and repair work. Install, remove, and repair large and small water services.
  • Locate, excavate, and repair water and sewer lines and related facilities.
  • Inspect water and sewer projects for leaks, decayed pipe, spillage, and pump malfunctioning.
  • Install barricades and route traffic in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Maintain plantings and turf areas.
  • Water, weed, trim, seed, renovate and fertilize turf, shrubs, trees and flower beds.
  • Rake leaves, clean walks, fields, courts and other facilities.
  • Load trimmings on trucks.
  • Spade and otherwise prepare ground around plants and shrubs including mixing and applying fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.
  • Plant and maintain trees, flowers, and shrubs.
  • Pick up rubbish and paper and perform general grounds cleaning.
  • Perform minor routine maintenance on sprinklers and irrigation equipment.
  • Drive vehicles used to transport materials, tools, and equipment as required.
  • Assist in moving and installing park and recreation equipment.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on mowing equipment and hand and power tools used in the work.
  • Perform minor servicing to truck and report mechanical or other problems; keep trucks stocked with supplies and materials.
  • Clean and care for tools and equipment.
  • Know and implement safe work practices.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Maintain routine records.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Physical Activities/Requirements
  • Physical activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • See well enough to read blueprints and standard text.
  • Hear and speak welI enough to converse in person, over the radio, and on the telephone and be understood.
  • Stoop, bend, reach to pick up material, crawl into confined spaces, traverse rough terrain, climb into and out of trenches and climb ladders up to 15 feet high to inspect work.
  • Use arms, hands, and fingers to write, draw diagrams, operate personal computer, use hand tools.
  • Perform overhead tasks using hand tools.
  • Lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Have the stamina to work in severe weather during a regular work schedule and beyond in the event of emergencies.
Typical QualificationsKnowledge of :Basic construction and maintenance methods, procedures, tools, equipment, supplies and materials use in any one of the following or a combination thereof:
  • streets and buildings maintenance and repair
  • parks and grounds maintenance work
  • water and sewer maintenance work
  • safe work practices under hazardous conditions

Ability to:
  • Provide a wide range of physically strenuous tasks as required.
  • Perform a variety of construction, repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Learn to operate a variety of light and/or heavy mechanical equipment.

Experience and EducationExperience: One (1) year of paid experience in landscape maintenance, asphalt, construction, or concrete work.License: A valid California driver's license is required. A commercial driver's license is desirable. As part of the background check prior to employment, an employee must obtain at his/her own expense a copy of his/her driving history from the State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Only original copies of the employee's driving history will be accepted. Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance industries. Safe work practices. Ability to: Respond and work under call-back emergency conditions sometimes in severe weather; perform a wide range of physically strenuous construction and maintenance tasks; understand and follow written and verbal instructions; keep routine maintenance and service records; relate with coworkers and the public in a tactful, courteous manner.
