SummaryThe Maintenance Worker position is assigned to the Facility Management Department, James A. Lovell Federal Healthcare Center - 556, VISN 12, Veterans Health Administration, Department Veterans Affairs, in North Chicago, IL.This job is open toThe publicU.S. Citizens, Nationals or those who owe allegiance to the U.S.VideosDutiesDuties include, but are not limited to:Plumbing Worker:Monitors irregular use and/or low flow fixtures by flushing at least twice per week until minimum required oxidant residuals are 'attained in the discharged water.Performs daily monitoring of systems that use chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant to check residuals at building's entry points.Works independently performing a variety of sub-journeyman level plumbing work including but not limited to repairing and installing small water pipes and new plumbing fixtures throughout the Fisher house.Follows safe work practices and procedures particularly while lifting, carrying tools, maintaining equipment, etc.Carpentry Worker:Works independently performing a variety of sub-journeyman level carpentry trade tasks in the maintenance, remodeling, and repair of all facilities associated with Captain James A. Lovell FHCC.Plans, performs layout, and accomplishes remodeling, repair or new facilities for offices, shops, storage areas, and equipment, to include, but not limited to assembly of modular and nonmodular office systems, used inside and outside.Maintains, repairs and documents all smoke and fire wall penetrations at the Fisher house which include sealing all wall penetrations with a material capable of restricting the transfer of smoke.Smoke and Fire walls shall be maintained to Accreditation and Life Safety Standards.Painter Worker:Performs a variety of sub-journeyman level painting assignments including brush, roller to accomplish painting and decorating of interior/exterior surfaces of buildings, structures, and/or other equipment when appearance as well as surface protection is important.Sets up ladders and/or scaffolds, prepares paints carefully, selects, uses and cleans brushes and other painting equipment.Washes, scrapes, sands, grinds or otherwise cleans surfaces to assure that dirt, loose paint, rust, deteriorated caulking, etc., are removed and that a good bond with paint, varnish, enamel or other coating is achieved. When appropriate, caulks before painting.Electrical Worker:Works independently performing a variety of sub-journeyman level electrical tasks at the Fisher house including resetting electrical breakers and making minor repairs to fluorescent fixtures and incandescent luminaries and desk lamps.A/C Equipment Mechanic Worker:Works independently performing a variety of sub-Journey level A/C Equipment Mechanic tasks located at the Fisher house including but not limited to adjusting A/C thermostats, preventative maintenance and changing filters on all A/C units which meet or exceed to manufacturers' instructions.Laborer Worker:Utilizes small tools (i.e., screw drivers, pliers, wrenches, electric screw drivers, hammers, vise grips, levels, etc.) to disassemble/assemble relocated furniture, shelves, bookcases, and any other items requiring minor work to relocate/reassemble.Gardner Worker:Mows lawns and turf areas and trims trees and shrubs. Develops flower beds and landscapes areas to enhance and beautify assigned work sites. Estimates quantities of plants, seeds, fertilizers and other material needed for a specific job. Select the proper fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides for the control of common plant diseases, plant insects, and weeds.Treats all turf, shrubs, and seed areas with various nutrients and chemicals in accordance with EPA regulations and FHCC requirements.Plants trees, shrubs and bushes as directed. (We cannot forward documents that contain pictures, therefore, Please DO NOT submit your driver's license with your application materials.)PHYSICAL EFFORT: The MaintenanceWorker must be capable of lifting, carrying, and moving heavy loads (weighing up to fifty (50lbs) pounds, stooping, climbing, standing, walking, squatting, kneeling, etc. Often times works in cramped spaces which involve muscular strength and sustained physical efforts. Workers may be required to work at variable heights from ladders, boom list, scissor lift or scaffolds to accomplish assigned tasks. Full use of arms, hands and legs is required to enable incumbent to accomplish these physical demands. Good hearing, corrected with an aid, and good eyesight, corrected with glasses, are required to enable incumbent to perform a satisfactory job.ANDWORK CONDITIONS: The Maintenance Worker can work inside or outside. When working outside, they areexposed to all kinds of weather conditions. Inside work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. The Maintenance Worker is frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt. They are exposed to the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts, and scrapes.Some work is performed in shop areas where the Maintenance worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes and other hazards associated with woodworking. The Maintenance Worker is subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. The Maintenance Worker may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on or around ladders and scaffolds. The Maintenance Worker may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The Maintenance Worker uses protective clothing and devices. On occasion, may be required to perform assigned tasks in asbestos-restricted areas. The Maintenance Worker will follow safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area, mishandling of the equipment, tools, and tasks involved at this level, may result in more serious injuries.Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
