Salary: $25.46 - $31.00 Hourly Location : Fairfield, OH Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 2024038 Department: Public Works Department Opening Date: 09/23/2024 Closing Date: 10/7/2024 11:59 PM Eastern Description The Fairfield Civil Service Commission is conducting an open competitive exam to establish an eligibility list for the position of Maintenance Worker/Laborer for the City of Fairfield on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at the Community Arts Center located at 411 Wessel Drive, Fairfield, OH 45014. Scope of the written exam will be multiple choice questions covering basic knowledge and knowledge of skills necessary to perform the duties of this position. A passing grade of 70% must be achieved to be included on eligibility list. Photo ID required at the time of test.Starting Pay Rate: $25.46 Hourly Probationary Period: 12 months For the Commission: Emily Hodges, Secretary www.fairfield-city.org EOE/ADA Under general supervision, perform a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks relating to the maintenance and repair of City facilities and equipment, streets, traffic control systems, parks, utilities, recreation areas and other City-owned property. Examples of Duties
  • In a safe and effective manner, operate heavy equipment such as: excavator, grader, backhoe, tractor, mower, dump truck, snow plow, pavement grinder, air hammer, chain saw, paint or striping machine and various other hand and power tools.
  • Performs inspections and operates facilities/systems.
  • Maintains and repair physical facilities including water, sewer and irrigation pipelines, fire hydrants, machines and grounds; trim trees, shrubs and brush; spray chemicals as needed; paint, clean and lubricate pumps, motors and related equipment; perform rough carpentry and concrete work; paint buildings and facilities; and perform custodial duties as assigned.
  • If assigned to the Public Works Department, operates snow and ice removal equipment including after-hours operations.
  • Manually shovels and moves road salt, dirt, snow, etc.; descend ladders into trenches or drywells or climb to elevated positions; and climb in and out of heavy equipment.
  • Conducts work in all kinds of weather.Requires working safely in confined spaces and dangerous situations such as flagging in heavy traffic, working in trenches, ditches and overflowing creeks.Work with color-coded maps and drawings.
  • Interfaces with computer systems to enter data or prepare reports. Maintains various programs/data on computer such as daily work logs and maintenance programs.
  • Utilizes manufacturers' instructions to accomplish tasks.
  • Performs all duties in a safe manner and per applicable Federal, State and local rules and regulations.
Typical QualificationsRequirements: Must be minimum 18 years of age; possess valid driver's license; and willingness to work various shifts. Successful completion of Civil Service exam. Must obtain a commercial driver's license within the probationary period.Preferred Qualifications: Have one (1) year work experience; familiar with methods, materials and equipment used in these types of work; able to follow written and oral instructions; able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates; able to perform the essential functions of these positions. Ability to operate large motor vehicles. Appreciation for hazards involved in construction and maintenance work. Ability to read mechanical drawings and blueprints preferred.
