Duties

These positions are Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal positions includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty (August) status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Joshua Tree National Park is November - May but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

Performs trails maintenance duties such as:

* Maintain trails to standard by cleaning water bars, removing excess rock on tread, brushing, cutting trail edge berm, digging dip drains and clears trail of trees, obstacles and debris.

* Laying out and constructing new trail in rocky, mountainous terrain, and in performing landscape restoration of abandoned trails.

* Removing windfalls, felling trees, and utilizing block, tackle, and winches for moving and placing heavy objects

* Construct water bars, retaining bars, causeway, dry/wet rock retaining wall and rip-rap.

* Routinely assist trail leaders in supervising crew members in the concepts and techniques of trail work and back country living ethics.

Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.

* You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

* You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

* You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime work.

* This position has a work schedule Monday-Thursday; but could change depending on the workload or needs of the park.

* If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

* You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 12 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

* Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

* You will be required to hike up to 20 miles a day while carrying a backpack weighing approximately 45 pounds with hand tools.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds., carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.

Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
