Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates operating health centers across the U.S. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit membership organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education.PPFA and PPAF seek a Managing Director for the Office of General Counsel (OGC) division, which provides legal advice and related services to both entities in areas including governance and board affairs, legal compliance, risk management, litigation, and all aspects of business law. This position is part of OGC s leadership team and reports to the General Counsel.Purpose:The Managing Director takes a leading role in all aspects of OGC s operations. This includes addressing special projects and challenges as they arise, as well as maintaining ongoing operational processes. This individual will serve as a strategic thought partner to the OGC leadership team and is expected to be a leader, connector and partner to staff in the division as well as to staff in other divisions. This position requires the ability to work well with colleagues to develop, coordinate, and execute plans that support continuous operations improvement, as well as effective communication with the broader organization. The ideal candidate can balance between strategic and tactical thinking, and can work with operations leaders to guide informed decision making and priority setting based on relevant data and information.Delivery:The Managing Director will strategically advise and plan for OGC s current and future operational needs, discussing solutions to problems and connecting people with information and with one another. This position will: Oversee the day-to-day work of the OGC, including planning for key deadlines, overseeing the OGC budget, and serving as the day-to-day supervisor for OGC staff. Serve as a thought partner to the OGC leadership team and help resolve strategic and structural issues facing the division, and to ensure business and staff challenges are dealt with in an open and effective manner. Work with divisional supervisors to manage personnel across OGC, including acting as OGC s primary operational liaison with the People, Culture & Equity Department, and supporting processes including onboarding, professional development, performance management, and advancement. Act as OGC s primary operational liaison with the Finance Department, leading processes including creating and monitoring the OGC budget, payment of invoices, and projection of expenses. Ensure that OGC s engagements with outside counsel are tracked and documented, that law firm invoices are appropriately reviewed and submitted, and that OGC can produce accurate and timely reports regarding legal matters and representations. Carry out or coordinate operations and projects related to legal matters, such as management of legal records, litigation holds, and discovery requests. Manage the general operations of OGC, including supervising operations staff, scheduling and leading OGC team meetings and events, and acting as the first point of contact and primary problem-solver for all operational problems. Manage communications, and coordinate content development, updates, and information between OGC and staff across other departments, and between OGC and external parties, by maintaining distribution lists, email accounts, shared email boxes, and the overall framework of OGC guidance and other resources on the Planned Parenthood intranet. Representing OGC on the cross-departmental committee of managing directors, who coordinate a range of management functions and work to improve operational processes, secure consistent implementation of shared work strategies, and promote OGC efforts across the PPFA and PPAF. Coordinate consistent OGC division and department actions to continually improve employee engagement across the division. Partner with the OGC Leadership Team and the DEI team to ensure that OGC advances efforts on building a diverse and inclusive organization. Partner with OGC s designated People and Culture (P&C) Business Partner to ensure consistent, timely, and accurate information, support, and implementation of HR practices across the division.Other duties such as special initiatives as assigned.Engagement: The Managing Director interacts with a wide range of individuals at various levels, including: As a member of the OGC leadership team, working closely with the other members of that team to assess and manage OGC operations. As the supervisor of OGC operations staff, overseeing that team s support of the department on matters such as travel planning, expense reimbursement, facility management, and support for meetings and events; As the Managing Director for staff across OGC, providing or facilitating support for members of that staff to make sure their operational and professional development needs are met; As the operational representative of the OGC leadership team, working with other departments and teams including Finance, People Culture & Equity, Intranet Management, Operations, and IT to resolve current problems and anticipate future needs; As a member of the cross-organization committee of managing directors, working with that body to coordinate services and advise senior management on operational challenges and opportunities.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:PPFA will consider candidates with a wide range of professional backgrounds and educational qualifications, but the successful candidate will have at least seven years of progressively responsible work experience and will be able to demonstrate prior success in all the following areas: Functioning well in a fast-paced, complex organizational environment. Communicating effectively with a wide variety of people and under a range of circumstances. Supervising others. Exercising diplomacy and discretion in handling sensitive matters and confidential information. Understanding and meeting the operational needs of a comparable working team. Comfort with information technology systems, and the ability to assist others in their use.In addition, it will be beneficial if a candidate is familiar with the operations of law offices, particularly the operations of an in-house legal department at a large and complex organization.Travel: This position may involve occasional domestic travel, mainly to ensure the individual is familiar with operations at OGC s offices in both New York City and Washington, D.C.$185,000 - $200,000 a yearTotal offer package to include generous vacation + sick leave + paid holidays, individual/family provided medical, dental and vision benefits effective day 1, life insurance, short/long term disability, paid family leave and 401k.
