CBSNews.com is seeking a Managing Editor to play a leadership role and oversee coverage during their shift! They will manage a team of writers and editors, make key decisions on story selection and breaking news coverage, and help develop and implements standard processes to expand the reach of our work. The Managing Editor is responsible for making sure our breaking news coverage is fast and accurate, as well as editing and producing stories for the website across a wide range of topics. They will collaborate with CBS News correspondents and other colleagues across CBS News & Stations to showcase the best of the network's reporting online, and lead all aspects of longer-term editorial projects for CBSNews.com as needed. This role requires strong news judgment and an ability to write and edit clear, accurate copy and craft compelling, SEO-savvy headlines on deadline in a fast-paced environment. The Managing Editor should also have experience making strategic, data-informed decisions and managing people and projects in a digital newsroom. Scrupulous attention to detail, a cool head under pressure, and excellent communication skills are essential! The hours for this role are Mon-Fri, 3p-11p ET, and requires two days a week in the NYC office.Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Manage and edit content, deciding the segments to prioritize and assign, and editing to the highest standards. Write stories and run live blogs as needed.
- Make proactive decisions on coverage plans.
- Ensure coverage aligns with company standards and show good judgment in handling sensitive topics, seeking advice when needed.
- Be vigilant about incorporating the website's best practices, including SEO guidance, to stay competitive in a fast-paced online news environment.
- Coordinate on push alerts, video and other elements.
- Field pitches from reporters, producers and correspondents and work with them to craft their stories for CBSNews.com.
- Work with senior management to continue developing strategy and communicating ideal practices on breaking news coverage across shifts.
- Manage a team of writers and editors, working with them to shape their copy and develop their skills, and monitoring their performance.
- Assist with scheduling and other administrative responsibilities.
Qualifications: - At least 7 years in a digital breaking news environment
- Experience directly managing teams and working cross-functionally to achieve newsroom goals
- You're a skilled writer and editor with demonstrated experience coaching writers and producers
- You're an effective communicator who can clearly articulate strategy and priorities to your team, your peers and senior leadership
- Understanding of and experience implementing editorial SEO best practices
- You have experience implementing new workflows and processes to strengthen a digital news organization

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
