Job Description: Mechanic ILocation: Currituck County SchoolsReports To: Director of Transportation or designated supervisorJob Type: Full-timePosition Summary:The Mechanic I is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repair work on school buses, trucks, and other district-owned vehicles and equipment to ensure their safe and efficient operation. The position requires mechanical expertise and the ability to troubleshoot and repair various types of vehicles and equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines, transmission systems, and electrical systems.Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine inspections, diagnostics, and maintenance on school buses, vehicles, and equipment, including oil changes, tire rotation, brake checks, and other preventive maintenance.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues, electrical problems, and other malfunctions, and determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Repair or replace damaged or malfunctioning parts, including engines, transmissions, fuel systems, brakes, electrical components, and air conditioning systems.
  • Maintain records of maintenance and repairs performed on vehicles and equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition and ensure they are used in a safe and effective manner.
  • Assist in the preparation of vehicles for state and local inspections, ensuring compliance with all required safety standards.
  • Respond to emergency repair needs as necessary, including roadside assistance for broken-down vehicles.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the work area and ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials, such as oil and other automotive fluids.
  • Communicate with supervisors and other staff regarding vehicle status, repair needs, and maintenance schedules.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications:Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Formal technical training in automotive or diesel mechanics preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Previous experience working as an automotive or diesel mechanic, preferably in a school district or public sector setting, is highly desirable.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of automotive and diesel engine repair.
  • Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and machinery used in vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and repair documents.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems in a variety of vehicles.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license (Class C) required.
  • North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements preferred or required within a specified time after hire.
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), bend, kneel, and perform manual labor for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including exposure to fumes, noise, and moving parts.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and perform physical activities for long periods during the workday.
Work Environment:
  • Primarily works in a shop environment with exposure to vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • May occasionally work outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule as needed, including occasional overtime or emergency repairs.
