SUMMARY Under supervision, this position performs work related to lubrication, fuel, and flat repairs, on automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment. This position exercises independence of action in executing work during night and/or day hours, and with no supervision in some cases. With limited supervision, and with hands on and classroom training, performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of all City owned equipment, to become a line mechanic. Employee must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel. Subject to after hours and weekend call backs.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES - Repairs and keeps records on automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other motor driven vehicles with fuel, oil, and lubricants, according to service schedule.
- Issues and records fuel and oil tickets.
- Records and issues tickets for tire repairs and changes.
- Balances tires.
- Makes minor repairs and reports major repairs needed, defective parts, of operation on equipment serviced, to his Supervisor.
- Operates a mobile service unit.
- Sweeps and cleans garage, removes snow.
- Breaks down and repairs tires.
- Trains to overhaul and repair, gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, drive units, fuel systems, front ends, brakes, suspension systems, chassis, cooling systems, instruments, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, pollution control devices, and heating and air conditioning systems.
- Responds to after-hours calls on a rotating basis.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one year of related experience in Auto Mechanics or servicing vehicles, including one year of experience as a Serviceman. Must be able to obtain a State Inspection License. Valid Texas Class C Driver's License, required. The Mechanic Apprentice must supply these tools: Roll Around Tool Chest, 1/2 Ratchet-Extensions, 1/2 Socket Set-Standard, 3/8 Ratchet-Extensions, 3/8 socket sets - metric & standard, 1/4 Ratchet-Extensions, 1/4 Sockets-Standard and Metric, 12 Volt test light, Wire Crimpers and Strippers, Side Cutters, Pliers Set, Medium Ball Peen Hammer, 3/8 Thru 15/16 Wrench Set, Allen Wrench Set Through 3/8, Common Screw Driver Set, Phillips Screw Driver Set, Punches and Chisels set, Metric Wrench Set 6mm thru 14mm and Tubing Wrench Set (flare nut wrench set).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Knowledge of practices, methods, and tools used in the mechanic trade related equipment found in a complete repair facility.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions, including repair procedures as found in manufacturers manuals.
- Ability to work well with other employees.
- Ability to complete simple records.
- Ability to do simple mathematical calculations.
- Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic and mechanical engines.
- Ability to operate lifting equipment and lubrication pumps.
- Ability to operate all vehicles serviced.
- Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
- Good verbal and written communication skill.
- Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
- Ability to work safely around garage area and irritating fuels and oils.
