General Purpose
Under general supervision, performs preventive and repair maintenance on plant machines and equipment to minimize plant production downtime, ensure plant safety, and ensure efficient use of resources and materials in production processes.
Essential Job Duties
1) Machine and Equipment Maintenance (performs some or all of the following performs more complex tasks under guidance of Sr. Mechanic):
* Receives assignments from supervisor for needed repair or preventive maintenance (including planned outage ) tasks, responds to requests from operators, or receives work orders via Maintenance Management System.
* Removes/installs machines using hoists, lifts, and hand and power tools, coordinates with manufacturers' representatives as applicable.
* Troubleshoots malfunctions; reads data from HMI screens and reports and various logs, listens to operator's observations, and/or observes mechanical devices in operation to diagnose causes of problems.
* Informs production supervisors or workers of required downtime; locks or tags out machines impacted to ensure safety.
* Requests needed parts and supplies from supervisor.
* Performs repairs and maintenance, including:
* Aligning equipment such as pumps, motors, controls, and gear drives.
* Removing worn or defective parts.
* Reworking bearings; changing seals.
* Changing mill and caster rolls; roll grinding, resurfacing and cleaning.
* Changing out oil cooling filters; draining oil and operating pumps to replenish oil.
* Cleaning casting filters: adding grain refining material as needed.
* Breakdown and cleaning air filters.
* Maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic systems; routine maintenance on compressors, gas, oil, water, and sewage lift pumps
* Routine maintenance on overhead cranes.
* Washing floors, repairing doors and locks; maintaining cooling tower, moving furniture.
* Maintaining Cardox fire suppression system valves, pumps, and heads.
* Performs routine maintenance on gas, diesel and electric industrial forklifts, trucks and other vehicles.
* Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments by using hand tools following schematic diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications.
2) Documents Work Activities and Results
* As assigned, maintains logs/records of maintenance history and life remaining on critical equipment/parts with defined usable life spans.
* Documents problems identified and work performed; creates as built drawings; provides to Maintenance Planning staff for input into preventive maintenance system.
3) Fabricates Parts
* Performs various machine shop tasks to fabricate guards, ladders, machine parts, etc., including cutting, milling, drilling, grinding, welding, etc.
4) Safety
* Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
* As time allows, walks floor to identify safety hazards; acts to mitigate hazards; creates related work orders if needed.
5) Communication
* Maintains continuity within and across shifts/work teams by documenting and communicating actions, problems, and continuing needs.
6) Contributes to Process Improvement
* Works with Engineering and other staff on a project basis to identify plant process improvements and new methods to improve efficiency.
* Suggests modifications to procedures to improve efficiency or safety.
Additional Job Duties
Performs additional tasks, including:
* Trains production employees on CARDOX system operation.
Overtime may be required for vacation coverage, machine breakdowns, equipment outages and other projects.
Key Competencies Required
Knowledge of Plant Production Processes
General understanding of all plant production processes.
Technical Understanding: Machines
Working knowledge of melting furnaces, roll casting machines, room air filtration systems, roll milling components and cooling systems, roll grinders, roll slitters, annealing ovens, coil coolers and air moving fans. Knowledge of lubricants and their proper uses in filters, oil reservoirs and grease fittings. Understand and able to apply knowledge of low and high pressure hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Technical Understanding: Tools
Working knowledge of shop machines and tools such as drill press, milling machine, metal lathe, bench grinder, pipe threading machine, band saw, core saw, sheet metal brake, welding equipment, and various hand and power tools. Work often requires compliance with close tolerances.

Physical Demands
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Work Environment

The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and high heat.

Qualifications
Education/Training Requirements
A High School diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through obtaining a one-year certificate from a secondary technical or vocational school, plus six months to one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
