Job Description :

Mechanical Design Compression Systems Fellow / SME

Location: Based out of Cheshire, CT

Reports to: Chief Engineer, Compressors

Salary Grade:

Job Description:

As the Mechanical Design Compression Systems Fellow and Subject Matter Expert specializing in aerospace engines, you will play a crucial role in the mechanical design, analysis, and optimization of compression system components within aircraft gas turbine engines. Your role will involve ensuring that a balanced mechanical design is realized which assures the structural integrity, reliability, and manufacturability of compressor components while meeting performance and reliability requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Component Design: Oversee the mechanical design of compression system components such as rotors, stators, casings, shafts, bearings and actuation mechanisms. Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed component models and drawings, considering geometric constraints, manufacturing processes, and assembly requirements.

Tolerance Analysis: Perform tolerance analysis to ensure proper fit, alignment, and clearance between mating components within the compression system. Consider manufacturing tolerances, thermal expansion effects, and operational conditions to optimize component interfaces and minimize assembly issues.

Structural Analysis: Conduct structural analysis using finite element analysis (FEA) tools to assess the mechanical integrity and performance of compression system components under various loading conditions. Evaluate factors such as stress, deformation, fatigue, and vibration to ensure components meet safety and durability requirements.

Manufacturability Optimization: Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to optimize component designs for manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of assembly. Implement design features such as simplified geometries, standardized fasteners, and modular assemblies to streamline production processes.

Materials Selection: Work with materials engineers to select appropriate materials for compression system components based on mechanical properties, temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and weight considerations. Evaluate material compatibility with manufacturing processes and operational environments to ensure long-term reliability and sustainability.

Design Validation: Develop and execute validation test plans to verify the mechanical performance and reliability of compression system components. Coordinate with testing facilities to conduct structural testing, including static load tests, fatigue tests, and vibration tests, and analyze test data to validate design assumptions and identify areas for improvement.

Configuration Management: Maintain configuration control of compression system components throughout the design lifecycle. Manage design changes, revisions, and updates in accordance with established procedures and documentation requirements.

Risk Assessment: Conduct risk assessments to identify potential mechanical issues such as structural failure modes, material degradation, and assembly errors. Develop risk mitigation strategies and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address identified risks.

Documentation and Reporting: Prepare comprehensive design documentation, technical reports, and presentations to communicate mechanical design concepts, analysis results, and design recommendations to internal stakeholders and customers. Furthermore, develop and maintain Standard Work documentation to meet all mechanical design requirements, including knowledge capture from assembly or testing.

Training: Provide guidance and hands-on training to lesser experienced personnel in the application of design tools, and in the balanced decision-making required to field a successful compression system design.

The listed responsibilities are not exhaustive and may evolve based on skill level, proficiency, and overall performance.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's and preferably Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

Strong background in mechanical design, solid mechanics, and finite element analysis.

Strong proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA, Siemens NX, SolidWorks) and FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus).

15+ years of experience with engineering mechanical design of compression systems components for gas turbine engines from a large OEM or supplier.

Knowledge of aerospace materials, manufacturing processes, and industry standards/regulations.

Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Joining our team as the Mechanical Design Compression Systems Fellow and Subject Matter Expert offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge aerospace engine technology, ensuring the mechanical integrity and reliability of compression system components in demanding aerospace applications. If you are passionate about mechanical engineering, aerospace technology, and innovation, we encourage you to apply and become part of our dynamic team.
