Mechanical Engineers at Espey are responsible for designing, developing, testing, and overseeing the production of mechanical systems and components. They collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to innovate solutions and ensure that projects meet technical and functional requirements. Mechanical Engineer III Key Responsibilities including, but not limited to:
- Responsible for the mechanical design of military grade systems including power transformers and other magnetic assemblies.
- Research, design, analyze and perform electro-mechanical layouts for high and low voltage electronic military and industrial equipment
- Design systems using SOLIDWORKS solid modeling software & ensure thermal and structural integrity of designs through extensive analysis using SOLIDWORKS SIMULATION FEA and SOLIDWORKS FLO SIMULATION CFD software
- Participate & lead design reviews and quality assurance activities to maintain high standards of product quality and reliability.
- Implement cooling designs utilizing liquid, natural convection, and forced convection
- Research and analyze data such as customer design proposal and specifications to determine feasibility of design or application.
- Responsible for the creation of component and assembly drawings, , bills of material, mechanical test procedures, and other documentation critical to the design, manufacture, and test of our products.
- Design and develop custom fixtures to assist in manufacturing, testing or qualification of units
- Plan and coordinate environmental testing, such as design verification or qualification
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (such as electrical engineers, manufacturing engineers, and product managers) to ensure project milestones and deadlines are met.
- Identify opportunities for design optimization, cost reduction, and process improvement.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Minimum 5 years' experience as a mechanical engineer in an industrial setting
- Minimum 5 years' experience in the following categories: Structural frame design, electronics packaging, thermal analysis, structural analysis, & drafting
- Essential Functions include: frequently required to sit, talk, & hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to secure Government Security Clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Deep knowledge of mechanical engineering practices, theory, application, & design experience
- Proficient in use of 3D model software SolidWorks (or equivalent), Thermal/Structural FEA, and Mechanical Design of Enclosures and Electronic Assemblies.
- Comfortable navigating complexity, troubleshooting unique problems, attention to detail, critical thinking, innovation, and independence balanced with cross-functional partnerships, bias for action, & strong written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of basic electrical theory with a focus on packaging of electrical components, with magnetic theory a plus
- Deep knowledge of thermodynamics with a focus on component cooling
- Possess a strong understanding of operations management, production planning, customer contracts, supply chain, engineering, and manufacturing principles
- Experience in working in manufacturing or production environments
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Experience with magnetic assemblies such as transformers and inductors, or MILSPEC products for airborne, ground mobile, or Naval applications
- Experience with high reliability equipment and mechanical qualification such as shock and vibration
