Why Berkeley LabMechanical technicians in this role fabricate, machine, and perform sheet metal work in a prototype scientific research environment. The Mechanical Technician in this role works directly with the machine shop lead, engineers, and scientists to fabricate simple to complex parts for scientific equipment in an R&D environment. They develop specific mechanical details with respect to component relationships, sizes, and fits, based on oral information, rough sketches, 3D models, or official engineering drawings, related to the basic design of the apparatus. Success and advancement in this position requires a very good knowledge of fabrication tools and methods, materials, computers, metallurgy, mechanics, and measurement.Mechanical Engineering Technician (Level 1) Specific Responsibilities:
  • Under the guidance of a mentor, the Mechanical Technician will perform a variety of routine technical work including fabrication, machining, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Perform work on a variety of manual and CNC machine tools, to include both newly acquired and legacy equipment.
  • Maintain shop inventory and a clean working environment.
  • Learn to utilize a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic materials, formulations, and processes.
Mechanical Engineering Technician (Level 2) Specific Responsibilities:
  • Under limited supervision, or independently on special assignments, provide broad and varied technical support at journey level in the field of mechanical and machine technology.
  • Perform moderately complex assignments and exercise independent judgment.
  • Design, develop machining process and fixturing, fabricate, modify, and inspect.
