Lead Mechanical Test Engineer

The Lead Mechanical Test Engineer is responsible for growing and sustaining mechanical test capability at the Rolls-Royce West Lafayette facility in West Lafayette, IN. The Lead Mechanical Test Engineer will plan, design, construct, execute, and supervise mechanical and fuel system test setups, as well as develop and execute capability growth strategies for mechanical and fuel system testing and play a key role in test engineering talent development at the Rolls-Royce West Lafayette facility.

Key Accountabilities
* Lead mechanical testing and aero engine fuel system testing lifecycle from request, estimation, and scheduling through test setup design, rig construction, and test execution.
* Design and construct test setups to achieve specified test results for customers.
* Design, troubleshoot, and maintain complex electro-mechanical test systems, instrumentation, advanced data acquisition, and experimental test control systems.
* Lead test readiness gate reviews, risk assessments, and assigned test engineering team.
* Present test and analysis results to internal and external customers.
* Fast and flexible: support the growing test capability in West Lafayette including facility operations, electric test, and live engine test.
* Create and execute test engineering strategies related to capability growth, facility improvements, instrumentation calibration, continuous improvement, business continuity, and capital investment.
* Lead, develop, and mentor test engineers and technicians to raise overall test capability and bench strength; supervise and mentor university student employees (e.g. coops, interns, student employees).
* Support business growth by building and fostering key working relationships with global and local test organizations, as well as Rolls-Royce engine project teams and university partners.
* Travel up to 10% domestically and globally.
Basic Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or related field with 2+ years of experience in engineering testing, OR
* Master's degree in Engineering with experience in engineering testing OR
* JD/PHD
* In order to be considered for the role, you must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
* Willingness to work alternate shifts on occasion as required to support testing.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience in designing and executing complex aerospace (or other highly regulated) qualification/certification test programs.
* Experience with automation, technical troubleshooting, or robotic systems.
* Expertise in metrology and calibration of test instrumentation including data acquisition systems.
* Experience in managing capital expenditure proposals and projects.
* General understanding of basic control theory/control laws.
* Comfortable using hand tools.
* Comfortable learning and using computer and software programming applications such as the following: NI LabView, WinACT, MATLAB, and Microsoft Excel.
* Desire to lead, coach, and mentor colleagues.
