Medical Office Billing and Coding (Insurance)

About the Role: Performs patient scheduling, insurance verification, and collection duties accurately, efficiently, and professionally. Demonstrate professionalism within their communication and interactions with patients and staff. Demonstrate sensitivity to confidential matters, be familiar with medical terminology, and the ability to problem-solve.

Responsibilities:

  • Report any misconduct, suspicious our unethical activities to the Compliance Officer.
  • Answering phone / Transferring calls
  • Working fax machine / copier / printer
  • Scanning of all documents
  • Obtaining Insurance Referral(s)
  • Entering / Linking Referrals into Patient Chart
  • Updating / Adding Insurance
  • Verification of Insurance (System or Call)
  • Collecting Money (Copay, deductibles, and previous balance)
  • Posting / Linking Money
  • Self-Pay patient(s)
  • Balancing of daily Money – EOD report
  • Running Reports / Updated spreadsheets
  • Printing Medical Records
  • On-line access to Insurance Companies
  • Knowledge of billing, insurance, and coding
  • Verify current coverage with third party payers, and obtain authorizations as needed.
  • Maintain current coverage status information on an ongoing basis for existing patients.
  • Submit bills for reimbursement from third party payers.
  • Submit invoices to patients for unpaid co-pay and insurance deductible amounts.
  • Resubmit rejected insurance claims.
  • Credit patient and/or insurance for overpayments and returns of equipment and supplies, and/or arrange for refunds of overpaid amounts.
  • Communicate with patients about account status, including the processing of financial hardship forms.
  • Communicate with supervisor as needed with regard to discrepancies and complaints.
  • Maintain current files and billing records, and make changes as needed so that patient information on file is accurate and complete.
  • Provide reports on billing activities as requested by supervisor.
  • Participate in surveys conducted by authorized inspection agencies.
  • Participate in the facility's Performance Improvement program as requested by the Performance Improvement Coordinator.
  • Participate in facility committees when requested.
  • Participate in in-service education programs provided by the facility.
  • Pursue continuing education programs appropriate to job responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education: College coursework in the Healthcare field
  • Minimum Experience: Organizational skills sufficient to maintain consistently accurate records. Ability to evaluate options and to make efficient decisions. Computer skills that include proficiency with spreadsheets and use of the internet, as well as word processing, and efficient use of the internet and e-mail.
  • Required Registration / License / Certification: N/A
  • Preferred Education: Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Business, Medical Coding or a Health related field. Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding
  • Preferred Experience: Prior experience with electronic health records. Prior experience working with insurance companies. 1 to 2 years Healthcare experience. 2 to 3 years Customer service experience
  • Preferred Registration / License / Certification: CPR Certification (or willingness to obtain)
