Applicant lists may be screened more than once.The New Mexico National Guard Job ChalleNGe Academy (NMNGJCA) in Albuquerque, NM, is a career technical education program that serves as an optional follow-on program for graduates of the New Mexico National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Academy in Roswell, NM. The goal of the NMNGJCA program is to prepare students aged 17.5 - 20 for living wage jobs while providing a no-cost place for them to live and study in a para-military environment while simultaneously developing life skills. Upon completion of a three-to-six-month career training curriculum, the NMNGJCA advocates for graduates and works to connect them with employment opportunities throughout the state. The newly established NMNGJCA will open for its first-class cycle in Fiscal Year 25. Why does the job exist?The Medical Officer is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive program of caring for students from enrollment through graduation. The Medical Officer ensures the well-being of the students and oversees their safety and wellness while they are living on campus in a 24/7 environment which includes providing routine treatment, training and guidance as well as responding to medical emergencies. How does it get done?- Evaluates prospective students application assessment for individual health concerns and counsels with administrators, students, and parents regarding each student's medical fitness to be attendance ready for the Job ChalleNGe Academy;- Communicate with medical providers and insurance companies and verify cadet insurance eligibility and benefits;- Collect and input student health and medical history information into Academy's database and maintain all confidential records;- Coordinate a program of communicable disease control based on SoNM immunization laws to include maintaining student records and communicating requirements to parents. - Prepare and submit required reports including accident reports and medical date as required by various health agencies; and - Report any safety hazards or unsanitary conditions to Academy Director. -Provide Medical Treatment: Conduct daily sick call for students; Prepare medication pass for daily distribution;-Schedule, coordinate, and transport students to medical, dental, and vision appointments;-Medication control for students: refill prescriptions, ensure OTC medication is stocked for use by Resident Advisors; inventory and order supplies;- Administer student urinalysis tests (drug screening);- Assess Cadets who are injured or who become ill at JCA, including performance of first aid and initial treatment; and- Notify parents and administrators of children who are severely ill or injured. - Coordinate health education and assist in planning the curriculum and instructional materials;- Provide general guidance in personal hygiene and healthy lifestyle practices;- Assist in prevention and control of communicable diseases; and- Provides general first aid training to staff members. Ideal CandidateExperience working in a para-military environment.State Government experience.Experience working with AT-Risk Youth. Minimum QualificationMust possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico, or a Graduate Nurse with a ¿permit-to-practice¿. Employment RequirementsCompletion of the hiring process is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment screening process. Pre-employment background check is required and conditional pending results. Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Ability to lift 10 pounds.
