Title: Mentor Department: Pre-College Programs Reports To: Director NJ Gear UP/College Bound Position Type: Staff Position Summary: The position of Mentor requires an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP/College Bound program. Employment and/or continued employment is subject to successfully passing State Mandated Criminal Background Check.The position for Mentor reflects a person who shares their knowledge, skills, information and perspective to foster theacademic growth of New Jersey GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)/CollegeBound participants. Mentors are examples of the academic goal of the NJ GEAR UP and role models that inspire NJ GEARUP students. The power of mentoring is that it creates a one-of-a kind opportunity for collaboration, goal achievement, and problem-solving. Mentors are assigned to work with participants in the program to foster academic growth through activities such as one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring, tutoring, classes/workshops, and field trips. These activities give students the motivation and preparation they need to attend and succeed in college.The program operates year-round during the Academic Year (fall and spring) and Summer Sessions (July-Mid August). Falland Spring Sessions are Monday thru Thursday (Occasional Fridays) from 8:00 am until 2:00pm and/or 3:00pm until5:00pm. Saturday Sessions are 20 sessions during the Academic Year from 8:00 am to 3:00 p.m. Note: Academic Year weekday school hours are adjusted as needed per school.Summer Session is currently up to six (6) weeks, Monday thru Thursday, from 8:30am until 3:00 pm with occasionalSaturday events. The Summer Session is six (6) weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30am until 3:00pm. Note: After and during school hours may be available based on specific school need during the Academic Year. Hours may be adjusted as needed. Essential Functions: Participates in all NJ College Bound Mentor Training sponsored by the New Jersey Higher Education and by theConsortium.2. Provides mentoring support and assistance to the mentees to encourage college attendance.3. Meets with assigned participants based upon agreed work schedule.4. Assists in the development of skills necessary for mentees to succeed both personally and academically.5. Assists assigned participants in developing realistic career/academic goals and expectations.6. Assists counselor in completing and reviewing Personal Education Plan (PEP) document with program participants.7. Accompanies mentees on field trips and other activities related to the program.8. Conducts and/or assists in conducting workshops concerning life skills, college readiness and education planning.9. Evaluates and documents experiences of assigned mentees.10. Provides resource information to mentees.11. Commits to a minimum of one (1) full session (fall, spring, or summer) {willing to make exceptions}.
