Salary: $15.15 - $23.04 Hourly Location : Enterprise, AL Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 23-00513 Department: Water Works Field Opening Date: 11/08/2024 Closing Date: 11/22/2024 7:30 AM Central Description This position is responsible for reading water meters to record customer usage data. Job Domains
  • Reads water meters along an assigned route; performs manual re-reads for all skipped meters.
  • Delivers meter read data to office for billing.
  • Identifies low and high usage meters and determines accuracy of data.
  • Inspects meters on stopped meter list for proper operation.
  • Completes work orders, including terminating services.
  • Examines, replaces, and repairs meters, lids, and boxes as needed.
  • Responds to and resolves customer complaints.
  • Replaces or repairs service lines, cut-off valves, meter couplings, meter washers, check valves, and other meters system components.
  • Marks locations of meter boxes.
  • Reports unusual or illegal activities, including theft of services.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Able to be On-Call after regular business hours to include weekends, weekdays, and Holidays.
  • Performs related duties.
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of meter reading equipment, policies, and procedures.

  • Skill in the reading, inspection, and maintenance of utility meters.

  • Skills in using digging tools.
  • Skills in using pipe wrenches.
  • Skills in basic water pipe plumbing - some type of experience to water plumbing.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Water System Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include traffic laws and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of related meter reading duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to read water meters. Successful performance contributes to timely and accurate completion of meter data collection and helps ensure the accuracy of customer billing.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, customers, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects and uses tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • The work is performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, etc. Work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY None. Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a high school diploma.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
