  • Carry out all department chair and teaching responsibilities in order to engage, inspire, and challenge faculty and students consistent with Lovett's core values, mission, and whole child education model.
  • Lead, oversee, and evaluate department's curricular design, opportunities, and effectiveness.
  • Provide primary mentoring, supervision, assessment, and evaluation of department faculty in the Middle School in coordination with the Assistant Head of Middle School and Head of Middle School for Teaching and Learning.
  • Recruit and hire new department members in partnership with the Assistant Head of Middle School of Middle School.
  • Foster constructive communication across all school constituencies.
  • Ensure efficient departmental operation.
  • Design purposeful curriculum as a classroom teacher, using multi-modal instruction and a variety of assessments in order to reach a diverse community of learners (academically, culturally, racially, religiously, etc.). Teach 2 sections of math classes.
  • Participate in faculty, department, team, and grade-level meetings as called.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned, including occasional responsibilities that may occur on weekends and evenings (e.g. parent night, graduation events, admission open houses, and student or faculty interviews).
Position Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree with significant coursework in English education or a related field. A master's degree is preferred.
  • Self-directed with good time management skills and the ability to manage concurrent responsibilities.
  • Love of working with middle school students and a willingness to engage them as whole students, balancing care and compassion with challenge and accountability.
  • Commitment to developing one's own self-awareness, cultural competence, and emotional intelligence.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to facilitate effective communication with students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • A strong desire to work in a collaborative learning community, employ a growth mindset, and participate in ongoing professional development during the school year and summer.
  • Purposefully design curriculum, instruction, and assessment in order to reach a diverse community of learners (academically, culturally, racially, religiously, etc.).
  • Professionalism, consistent application of school policies, and regular and reliable attendance.
