Job Description :
The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a field technician to join the QMPS team in Warsaw, NY. The Field Technician thrives in an outcome-driven environment with clear deadlines, enjoys working on routine and detailed tasks, and is able to identify and troubleshoot problems using standard operating procedures (SOP). They are extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads, and work well under pressure in a team-based environment.The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Schedule, travel to, and perform milking time surveys on dairy farms in New York and neighboring states for detection of udder infections; this requires travel and irregular hours, including evenings and early mornings
  • Aseptically collect milk samples, identify abnormal udder secretions
  • Examine milking systems and their installations using state of the art testing and evaluation equipment
  • Observe and record environmental conditions and management practices based on developed SOP
  • Collaborate with field veterinarians to troubleshoot farm problems and help producers meet milk quality goals
  • Work on research projects and research trials; collect data, complete forms, and follow SOP
  • Evaluate data from field surveys and questionnaires using various software applications including DHIA, DC305, LIMS
Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.Required Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in a science related field, with up to two years of experience working in agriculture, or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer programs; comfortable with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database management, and on-farm dairy management software systems
  • Strong background/knowledge of dairy farm management and operation
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to observe cattle facilities, safely obtain milk samples from dairy cattle, and identify abnormal milk in a barn setting
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 50 pounds
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in animal science
  • At least two years of experience in dairy farm operation, involving herd health, and milking equipment function
  • Basic knowledge of Hispanic culture with the ability to communicate in Spanish
  • On-farm experience is a major advantage
  • Familiarity with applied research and quality assurance programs
Important Details about the Position
  • This is an onsite position located in Warsaw, NY
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance

This position is 39 hours per week. Specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks.
