Hamilton County provides reasonable accommodation to qualified employees and applicants with known disabilities who require accommodation to complete the application process or perform essential functions of the job, unless the accommodation would cause an undue hardship.Incumbent serves as Vector Control Technician, conducts field surveillance and performs appropriate activities and procedures to control mosquito activity and prevent possible outbreaks of related diseases.DUTIES:Inspects and monitors known and reported mosquito breeding areas, assesses appropriate methods for control, and applies proper control and / or eradication techniques.Applies larvicide chemicals to identified mosquito breeding sites to prevent the emergence of adult biting mosquitoes.Collects mosquito larval samples and sort adult mosquito collections prior to identification.Places ovitraps, light traps, gravid traps, and other monitors in selected areas to capture mosquito eggs and adults to determine mosquito population levels.Applies adulticide chemicals via truck mounted Ultra-Low Volume applicator device and hand-held thermal fog device to control adult biting mosquitoes.Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and application equipment; check mechanical functions, oil fluid supply of trucks; report problems to supervisor.Maintains and repairs light traps, gravid traps and other equipment as required.Inspects, maintains, and uses all personal protective equipment required to perform job duties.Maintains detailed computer records and organized document and record files for all activities as required.Performs related duties as assigned.I. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:Must have a dependable vehicle. Hamilton County will provide reimbursement of at the current county rate. (Usually, a fleet vehicle is available for use)Education in Biology, Entomology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Public Health or closely related field preferred.Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions/directions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.As a result of the duties associated with this job, there is the potential of becoming exposed to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious diseases. To safeguard employees and eliminate the liability placed on Hamilton County, employees working in this position shall begin the three shot Hepatitis B vaccination and subsequent training within 10 days of their initial job assignment per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030(f)(2)(i). The initial and two subsequent vaccinations shall be administered by the Hamilton County Health Department and are free of charge to the employee. If the employee has previously received the three shot Hepatitis B vaccination, official documentation must be provided to the supervisor identifying the dates in which each shot was appropriately administered. A Temporary Medical Declination may be made for a period of up to six months. A Declination form must be completed, outlining the medical reasons for the temporary declination and forwarded to the Safety & Risk Manager. Employees temporarily declining the vaccine are prohibited from performing any duties in which they may be exposed to a blood borne pathogen or other potentially infectious disease until they are able to begin/continue the series of vaccinations. Failure to comply will result in termination of employment.II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:Incumbent performs according to well-defined legal requirements and department policies and procedures, exercising independent judgment in applying guidelines and technical knowledge to specific cases and circumstances.III. RESPONSIBILITY:Incumbent applies standardized practices to specific cases, referring to supervisor unusual or unprecedented situations as needed. Incumbent receives indirect or occasional supervision, with work reviewed primarily for attainment of and effect on department goals/objectives.IV. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:Incumbent communicates regularly with co-workers, property owners, and the public for purposes of exchanging information, explaining/interpreting policies and procedures, public education, and resolving problems.Incumbent reports directly to Vector Control Specialist.V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:Incumbent performs duties in a variety of settings, including a standard office environment, outdoors, and in a vehicle. Duties may involve standing/walking for long periods, sitting and walking at will, walking on uneven terrain, speaking clearly, keyboarding, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing under 50 pounds, crouching/kneeling, bending, reaching, color and depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, close and far vision, handling/grasping/fingering objects, and exposure to inclement weather, dust, dirt, odors, sewage gases, heavy machinery, toxic chemicals, and communicable diseases.
