Job Description :
About Us: The Movement Innovation Collaborative (MIC) is a new entity that will deepen and expand the capacity, impact, and sustainability of California's grassroots movements for racial justice and social transformation. The Movement Innovation Collaborative will support changemakers and organizations to catalyze innovations in movement strategy and power building, intergenerational leadership development, and our collective long-term sustainability and resiliency. Through a network of physical and virtual centers, the Movement Innovation Collaborative will also contribute a key piece of infrastructure needed to fuel transformative structural change across California. This network will consist of new and existing centers serving hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of grassroots leaders in California. We aspire to raise the necessary resources to fuel the mission, vision, and programs of the Movement Innovation Collaborative. The Movement Innovation Collaborative (MIC) is focusing on three core strategies to deepen the power, coordination, and impact of the sector. In all three areas, we will create program and infrastructure supports that are additive and synergistic with existing movement efforts rather than duplicative.
  • Movement Strategy and Innovation
  • Intergenerational Leadership Development
  • Healing Justice and Sustainable Work Culture
What You'll Be Doing: The MS&I Program Strategy aims to create consistent cross-racial, cross-sector, and intergenerational spaces for innovation, risk-taking, problem-solving, and learning to advance the theory and practice of power building. The strategy was informed by regional organizers and organizations, who shared a need for spaces to experiment and learn from peers, share breakthrough thinking, innovate on approaches to power building and expand the boundaries of movement work to have an observable impact for passing transformational policy, shifting public narrative and increasing resources for marginalized communities. This is the most emergent of MIC's program strategies. The MS&I Program Strategy Director will both lead this program and play an important role across programs by developing and holding MIC's approach to strategy and innovation:
  • In partnership with MIC leadership and other key stakeholders, this role will develop and implement a strategy for the MS&I program that focuses on the big questions facing the power building ecosystem and the innovation and strategy required to build the power we need. This work includes:
    • Defining and prioritizing goals and outcomes into actionable workplans to meet the overall objectives of the strategy
    • Developing and overseeing experiments in building movement infrastructure and ensuring they are evaluated and analyzed for movement learning and growth
    • Review and leverage the findings from the pilot phase to inform the strategic direction of the MS&I program
    • Convene a wide range of stakeholders to engage in a collaborative and consensus decision-making process for planning and implementation of strategy
    • Cultivate networks and deepen relationships with practitioners, subject-matter experts, researchers, and capacity builders
  • In addition to the specific responsibility of leading the MS&I Program, this role is responsible for holding MIC's overall approach to fostering innovation, learning and breakthrough experimentation, innovation on approaches to power building and for supporting all the programs in advancing experimentation, innovation and learning. These responsibilities include:
    • Supporting the development of MIC's overall approach to strategy and innovation
    • Working in close collaboration with other MIC leadership to ensure alignment, cross-fertilization, and shared programming across all program strategies, particularly in strategy and innovation
    • In collaboration with Learning and Impact Director, oversee knowledge capture and dissemination related to the MS&I program and inform MIC's approach to learning and more broadly across all program strategy
We envision that as we move beyond the startup phase, the responsibilities for this position will shift to address other growing and strategic needs of MS&I in the power building field and the needs around strategy and innovation across all of the program strategies. Who You Are: While no one person will embody all of the qualities described below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:
