An employee in this classification works under the direction of an Operation Shift Supervisor (OSS) or Lead Multicraft Operator (LMCO) at all LE/Energy Production Generation Plants and is responsible for operating and maintaining large industrial power-generating machinery. In addition to daily operations and maintenance tasks associated with power generation, this employee will be routinely required to perform performance tests on operating equipment. An employee in this classification is expected to possess skills in the operations of multiple generating plants and have journeymen-level knowledge in a Maintenance (Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) craft. The journeyman-level employee may be ultimately responsible for instructing and training the MCO Apprentice and Plant Helper. Work may involve operating and maintaining plant electrical and control systems or making mechanical repairs. Work assignments may arise due to breakdowns of equipment in the plant, oral or written instructions, or from firsthand inspections and performance test results of the equipment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs regular checks and monitors equipment and system performance.
- Isolates and returns to service equipment such as boilers, turbine generators, compressed air systems, cooling water systems, lube oil systems, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide systems, circulating water systems, natural gas delivery, combustion turbines (gas and diesel), demineralizes, process water treatment systems, fuel burner systems, motors, pumps, heat exchangers, and other associated equipment and chemicals located in a large multi-fuel burning generation station safely.
- Performs routine preventative maintenance of equipment and provides safe electrical and mechanical isolation of the equipment through electrical and mechanical isolation points and procedures.
- Performs a variety of medium to complex journeyman-level mechanical tasks on heavy power generation equipment, such as boilers, steam turbines, combustion turbines (gas and diesel), gas and air-cooled generators, single to multi-stage high-pressure centrifugal process pumps, gearboxes, motor-operated valves, process control valves, pressure relief valves, air compressors, reciprocal pumps, conveyors, piping systems, condensers, heat exchangers, filtration systems, and other power generation equipment.
- Performs diagnostics of complex mechanical systems and completes mechanical repairs to the system.
- Operates heavy equipment, may perform heavy machinery rigging (if certified), and reads blueprints, piping, and instrument flow diagrams.
- Performs plumbing and pipe fitting functions and does layout and fabrication work with steel and alloy materials.
- May perform basic plate welds (3G), using electric arc process, performs basic welds in oxygen acetylene process as directed, performs oxygen acetylene cutting.
- Performs mechanical repairs to combustion fuel engines, gas, and diesel.
- Makes running adjustments to equipment based on performance curves and historical documentation.
- Performs minor to complex machinery alignment, thermography, and vibration detection.
- Performs a variety of medium to complex journeyman-level electrical and instrument tasks on heavy power generation equipment, such as boilers, steam turbines, combustion turbines, gas and air-cooled generators, electric motors, motor-operated valves, process control valves, air compressors.
- Performs diagnostics of complex electrical wiring and control instrument circuits.
- Installs power, control, and lighting circuits in the generation facility.
- Installs, adjusts, calibrates, maintains, and repairs various power generation electrical and electronic equipment.
- Performs preventative, minor, and corrective maintenance to analog and digital control equipment, repairs, and maintains medium voltage breakers.
- Performs repairs on low voltage MCC / Breakers.
- Samples, analyzes, replenishes, and maintains pure water system, associated equipment, and laboratory.
- Performs administrative duties such as monitoring budget expenditures and resource allocation.
- Conducts all duties and assignments in compliance with safety rules and procedures.
- May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- The position is designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs repair tasks with hand, machine, and motor-operated tooling routinely.
- Maintains detailed work reports for historical documentation and future equipment upgrades.
- Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)External Candidates:
- High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- Four (4) years experience in the vocation of Industrial Mechanics, Industrial Electrical/Electronic/Instrument & Control work at journeyman-level, or journeyman-level power plant operational experience in an industrial setting, with demonstrated aptitude.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other competencies necessary for success in the target position may be considered. Internal Candidates:
- Five (5) years of experience as a Multicraft Operator Apprentice and successful completion of all requirements of the MCO Apprenticeship Program.
- Completion of four of the six outside area qualification check sheets. Areas are; MPP Outlying/UO, U5 Outside, MREP, GT2, U8 Outside, and Winston.
- The MCO Apprentice must be MCO Craft qualified in either the Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrument and Control craft to be eligible for promotion.
Note: The remaining qualification sheets must be completed for further advancement in the MCO position. OSS will identify training goals for the IDPs.An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other competencies necessary for success in the target position may be considered. Craft:
- An equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrated to be a direct replacement to the preceding specific requirements may be substituted, such as Electrical Journeyman License or higher level or successfully passing the MCO Mechanical Journeyman Testing.
- Completed the Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrument and Control MCO Qualification Sheet and are proficient in that skill set.
- Completed the Journeyman Level Training program for that craft.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

- Must be willing and able to wear a full-face respirator, SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus), or 10-minute escape pack.
