As part of the Municipal Services Department, this position performs skilled design, assembly, installation, and maintenance of all non-mechanical traffic control devices according to the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and City ordinances. Responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely completion of duties related to sign and road marking installations and maintenance using vehicles, equipment, and assembling supporting documentation for each assignment. Other duties: performs surveys and reads blueprints in preparation of proper sign and marking layout and installation, operates and maintains heavy and technical equipment necessary to perform assigned duties, and performs emergency services during non-business hours as needed. Required to work assigned shift during snow removal; operates snow removal equipment as required. Assists other crews as needed. Updates computerized asset management system (Cityworks) with information on inspections, service requests and work orders, including work performed, labor, materials and equipment. Operates a motor vehicle to conduct City business. Responds to after-hours callouts as required. Must be available for Drop-Off Depot clean-up events as needed. Must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines, beginning and ending assignments on time. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; three to four years of progressively responsible related experience in construction and maintenance; one year of experience in the fabrication of traffic signs and installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings preferred; and 21 years of age. Within one year of appointment, obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certifications for Work Zone Traffic Safety and Signs and Markings Level I. Must have or be able to obtain Class A CDL with air brake endorsement, without 'K' restriction within six months of hire. Must also obtain Flagger certification and complete required NIMS training within first six months of hire. Knowledge of proper use of tools, materials, safety hazards and precautions used in various construction trades; MUTCD Manual and applicable City ordinances. Physical Demands: Regularly required to lift, move or carry objects up to 75 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching on narrow, slippery surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs; move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to lift &/or move objects up to 75 pounds, plus or minus 25 pounds. May be required to stand, sit, crouch, or bend for extended periods. Must have visual acuity and hand dexterity to operate various equipment for the job. Typical Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, machinery and paint fumes; noise from various equipment and hand tools or extended periods; outdoor conditions including extreme heat and cold.
