This mission is carried out through the presentation of exhibits that tell the history, performing research to enhance one's understanding of the community, by providing educational materials and presentations, and through a myriad of other means. This presentation of the past is integrated with how it impacts our lives and community today. Our Museum Curators are the people charged with fulfilling this mission. Churchill County is now looking to fill one full-time Museum Curator positions. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in history, anthropology, archeology, museum studies, or a related field, along with at least two years of museum operations experience. (Candidates without a Bachelor's Degree will be considered, but the Bachelor's Degree is highly desirable.) This position will require the person to cross-train and perform the full variety of curator duties. You must be energetic, adaptable, willing, and able to get up to speed quickly and adeptly move from one task to another. You might be performing research one day, cataloging photographs the next, accessioning artifacts the next, working with educators the next, updating and maintaining displays and exhibits the next... expect variety! The county pays 100% of the retirement contribution to PERS on your behalf (33.50% over and above your wage, equivalent to $7.11/hour or $14,775/year). The county pays 100% of the employee-only health insurance premiums (equivalent to $12,115/year). AND you will not have Social Security taken out of your paycheck, which results in an additional 6% take-home pay (equivalent to $2,650/year). Position Summary: Responsible for collection, inventory, cataloging and exhibition of historic materials and museum artifacts for the education and enjoyment of the public; plans, curates and produces exhibitions, events and/or projects and related programming for museum spaces or assigned collection.Distinguishing Characteristics This is a technical class responsible for the development and implementation of a variety of educational and entertaining exhibits and/or programs to be viewed by the public. This class is distinguished from the Museum Director in that the latter is responsible for supervision and management of museum operations.   • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Develops and coordinates educational and outreach programs, including tours, school visits, workshops, lectures and classes; selects topics and designs, plans, outlines and assembles the programs; conducts research on relevant topics and searches for artifacts, photographs and documents; advertises and conducts the programs.
  • Receives, inventories, catalogs and shelves or stores all new acquisitions according to professional standards.
  • Assists in the acquisition, preservation and restoration of artifacts; ensures that such items are properly stored, transported, inventoried and protected during display.
  • Determines items needed to fabricate exhibits; researches vendors and other methods of material acquisition; prepares purchase requisitions and follows-up to ensure the proper delivery of required materials; fabricates and maintains exhibits.
  • Researches and produces exhibitions and/or events, activities or manages special projects including, but not limited to, researching topics and background information, writing, and publishing brochures and related materials, etc.; stages exhibitions and/or events; plans programs to support community events.
  • Prepares or obtains artwork, graphics, informational text and other materials required to complete specific exhibits.
  • Observes public reaction to exhibits and makes changes to enhance educational value or visual appeal as required; interacts with, explains museum exhibits, and may conduct tours as required.
  • Greets and assists general public, customers and staff in person, over telephone and by email; answers inquiries; receives and attempts to resolve special inquiries; provides guidance on museum programs and exhibits.
  • Monitors visitors during facility hours of operation to ensure orderly conduct; reports unsafe conditions; opens and closes facility as required.
  • Crosstrains and performs functions of other Museum staff as required.
  • Assists in the development of communication plan for exhibits, events and/or projects; performs outreach through communication with other organizations in an effort to publicize exhibitions, events, activities and/or projects.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Museum's service to its customers by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a team.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and ExperienceTwo (2) years (60 semester units) of college-level coursework, with major coursework in history, archeology, or a closely related field (a Bachelor's Degree is highly desirable); AND two (2) years of museum operations experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Most part time positions provide no benefits.No Nevada state income taxRetirement Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) of Nevada - Churchill County contributes 33.5% of an eligible Regular Member's salary for retirement. Churchill County contributes 50.0% of an eligible Police Member's salary for retirement. Retirement benefits are available to employees hired in positions that work 20 hours per week or more on a regular basis. Positions of less than 20 hours per week (or less than 1040 hours in a fiscal year) will receive Social Security contributions and will not be enrolled in PERS.Deferred Compensation Plans Employees can also participate in the VOYA 457 deferred compensation plan, which is funded by the employee. This allows the employee to save money in pre-tax dollars toward retirement.Cafeteria Health Coverage Plan - Full-time employees' health insurance begins the first of the month after one month of employment. (Employees must work an average 30 or more hours per week on a regular basis to qualify for health insurance coverage.)The county offers a Cafeteria health plan to full-time employees, which allows employees to pick and choose the best health plan for them and their family. In addition, the county also provides the following: a prescription plan, a dental plan, and a vision plan. The county currently contributes 100% of the employee premiums for the base PPO plan and the HDHP, as well as for the prescription, dental, and vision plans. Employees who elect dependent coverage pay 100% of the dependent premiums - employees can elect to have those premiums deducted in pre-tax dollars.Vacation Leave Full-time, regular county employees scheduled to work 40 hours per week accrue 8 hours per month of annual (vacation) leave per year. Part-time, regular county employees accrue annual (vacation) leave vacation at a prorated amount depending the number of hours worked. Employees earn additional annual leave hours at 5, 10, 15, and 25 years of service up to a maximum of 240 hours (30 days) per year. While on probation an employee is not granted vacation leave for the first six months; the employee still accrues vacation leave during this time and will be credited with 48 hours of vacation leave after six months of employment in their regular position.Sick Leave Full-time, regular county employees scheduled 10 hours of sick leave per month, with no maximum accrual. Part-time, regular employees accrue sick leave at a prorated amount depending the number of hours worked. HOLIDAYS - Regular county employees enjoy 12 paid holidays per calendar year including New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Nevada Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Family Day (Friday after Thanksgiving), and Christmas Day. In addition, County employees are entitled to one floating holiday per year, to be used at a time agreed to by the employee and his or her supervisor. (Regular, part-time employees receive prorated holidays based on the number of hours normally worked.)Tuition Reimbursement Churchill County values it's employees and empowers all employees to enhance their skills by taking job-related college courses as well as participating in job related workshops and seminars.
