This limited duration position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in La Grande, Oregon and will last through September 30, 2026.
We will also consider a Job Rotation for current, regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in good standing in a permanent or limited duration position (not temporary or seasonal) that is expected to continue through at least September 30, 2024. What you will do:
* Participates in collection and management of scientific data for adult spring/summer Chinook Salmon and summer steelhead at hatcheries and streams in Northeast Oregon. Works with hatchery staff to streamline data collection, electronic data management, and summarization for the ODFW hatchery management system (HMS) and the Pacific State Fish Inventory System (FINS). Participates and lead data collection efforts for broodstock spawning and juvenile sampling at hatcheries in Northeast Oregon. Works with ODFW hatchery staff and the Pacific States FINS development core team to document data collection and data transformation steps to create reproducible workflow processes. Coordinates, provide data summaries, and participate in hatchery Coordinated Assessments. Assists in developing connections between web services and data systems to automate data summaries. Uses the HMS and ODFW Mark Recovery databases, FINS, PTAGIS, RMIS, DART, internal NE Research Excel spreadsheets and Access databases. Develops Survey123 forms, spreadsheet, databases, and models for data collection and data transfer to HMS and FINS. Updates current databases using Excel, Access, and ODFW's HMS system.
* Performs collaborative research; gives input into planning, design, research goals and objectives; meets contract obligations. Coordinates implementation and research schedules. Analyzes data using pertinent statistical programs (e.g., R, Python, SAS, etc.) for hatchery program evaluations. Performs literature searches pertinent to research. Participates in spring/summer Chinook Salmon spawning ground surveys. Assists with and collaborate in research projects and studies as assigned. Collects juvenile and adult salmon from hatchery ponds with seines and dipnets. Measures lengths and weights of juvenile and adult salmon. Collects scales, fin rays, and genetic samples for age and origin determination.
* Tabulates and summarizes data in formats suitable for presentations and reports. Prepares and makes project presentations for professional and interagency meetings as assigned by project and program leader. Writes sections of annual progress, monthly and quarterly reports.

Working Conditions
* Work up to 8 hours a day on a computer terminal. Travel required to hatcheries and regional offices. Position requires occasional long-distance travel to study sites and meetings and occasional long hours in all types of weather. Up to eighty percent of time spent in office during normal working hours. Outside work in inclement weather, in cold swift streams, and at hatcheries.
* This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked daily, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified or uncertified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
* Two years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; or three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program; OR
* One year of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Master's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences; OR
* A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.
Applicants who have obtained a Master's degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience. The Master's degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.
Requested Skills:
* Experience using R, GIS, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and Word
* Writing progress reports, technical reports and scientific publications
* Experience with application programming interfaces
* Efficiently managing large and complex datasets
* Working with fisheries sampling gear
* Handling and sampling fish in a hatchery setting
