OverviewThe New York Public Library's Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) department is seeking a program coordinator to support community outreach and the expansion of services as part of our HPD partnership for Neighborhood Tech Help (NTH). The program coordinator will manage up to 15 part-time neighborhood tech help and outreach staff who will engage with the community through outreach and by providing basic technology assistance to individuals who need coaching in introductory digital skills and/or access to affordable home internet service and internet-capable devices in order to become effective home internet users in the Bronx and Manhattan.
The Program Coordinator reports to the Senior Manager, Community Outreach and Engagement to ensure the smooth execution and development of NTH programming and targeted community outreach. They will liaise with external organizations to make offsite programming available in person and coordinate with internal departments to produce a range of NYPL patron-centered community outreach events and activities. They must have excellent organization and people management skills, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities and personalities with ease.
This is a grant-funded position funded for 15 months.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:
- Build and supervise a team of NTH Outreach Associates
- Establish community partnerships to support the goals of the NTH program and NYPL outreach
- Take ownership of managing communication with part time tech help staff as well as surveying and addressing patron or branch needs through feedback
- Support program goals to ensure a successful launch and implementation of the neighborhood tech help program
Teach:
- Neighborhood Tech Help staff how to plan and implement effective outreach tactics
- Neighborhood Tech Help staff members how to access tools and resources needed to serve the public efficiently
Learn:
- COE strategic priorities, to be immersed in the services provided
- Internal and external resources that benefit the community
Improve:
- Digital literacy services provided in underserved communities
- Internal and external partnerships to coordinate event logistics, increase learning goals, and usage of the department's services
Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month, this person will:
- Understand the objective and goals of the NTH program
- Be familiar with the Library's programs, services, and communities.
- Have identified suitable community spaces for NTH programming, and initiated at least one community partner agreement
3 months, this person will:
- In collaboration with the Senior Manager, recruit Lead NTH Outreach Associate and NTH Outreach Associates
- Have conducted and evaluated at least one test NTH program in one of the priority locations
- Have identified suitable community spaces for NTH programming, and initiated at least one community partner agreement in all three target neighborhoods
6 months and beyond, this person will:
- In collaboration with the Senior Manager, have filled the majority of NTH Outreach Associate positions
- Develop a schedule of NTH outreach programs in all three target neighborhoods
Responsibilities
- Oversee implementation of the Neighborhood Tech Help program, scheduling of staff and data collection
- Build community relationships to support program implementation, outreach, and promotion
- Coordinate contracting process with program partners to ensure availability of appropriate programming space in community locations outside of the Library
- Hire and develop a flexible team with a strong commitment to establishing impactful connections with people through targeted outreach and one-on-one interactions
- Supervise NTH Outreach Associates in the field
- Create, maintain and report programming and outreach statistics
- Coordinate activities with various organizations, businesses, and support units, responsible for logistics including monitoring the maintenance and use of audio/visual equipment
- Maintain a high level of customer service
- Perform related duties and work on special projects as required.
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant work experience, or in lieu of a Bachelor's degree 2-3 years of relevant work experience.
Required Experience
- Successfully demonstrated public service experience delivering tech help with the ability to work well with diverse patrons.
- Strong computer skills and knowledge of using Microsoft Office programs and Google Drive products.
Required Skills
- Fluent in conversational, reading and writing skills in Spanish.
- Experienced in community outreach and engagement in diverse communities and a commitment to DEIA.
- Knowledge of current technology platforms and devices.
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a team atmosphere and independently under minimal supervision. Adaptable to changing work environments.
- Excellent time and detail management and communication skills—written and verbal—for varied audiences, including public speaking, managing group discussion, classroom management, and listening skills. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel frequently within the NYC Metro area.
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position will hire, develop and lead a team of hourly service-based staff.
