The reporter will cover a variety of stories. The ideal reporter will have excellent grammar and English skills, a knowledge of AP Style and be familiar with social media and photography.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Gather stories and prepare text about people, issues, places and events.
- Present stories in an interesting, accurate and fair manner for publication in the newspaper and online.
- Be alert and vigilant for story leads.
- Interview in a friendly and professional manner.
- Maintain journalistic code of ethics and adhere to company code of ethics.
- Attend scheduled meetings and events.
- Be a self-starter and show initiative for most story assignments, requiring minimum guidance from news editor.
- Submit clean copy by AP Style standards that requires minimal editing.
- Carry camera to capture events.
- Provide customer service to internal and external customers.
- Prioritize “news first” and post breaking news items as soon as possible on the website.
- Minimum of 8 bylined stories each week with multiple sources, including at least one story for each section front. (Military Life Tuesday, Healthy Wednesday, A&E Thursday, Family Friday, Education Sunday, Business Sunday, Outdoors Sunday).For part-timers: Minimum of 3 bylined stories each week.
- Average of one every other month: major in-depth reporting package.
- Clear communication with photographer/visual team, and art to go along with each story. Reporters are expected to attach art if it is contributed and double-check the cutlines from photographers.
- Communication with news editor when story is completed.
- Meet regular and recurring deadlines (4 p.m. day before or within two hours of event/meeting conclusion).
- Be on the scene.
- Collaborate with newsroom staff.
