We are seeking one Field Technician to assist with ongoing Northern Bobwhite field research in South Carolina. This work will include quail trapping using baited walk-in funnel traps; this involves clearing trap sites, pre-baiting, and baiting of trap sites, checking traps daily and processing captured quail. This candidate will process quail by attaching a leg band to all individuals, and collaring a subset of individuals with radio tags. The candidate will track all collared quail 2-3 times per week to mark their locations and locate nests to monitor for success or failure. Trapping and tracking of quail are a large part of this candidate's weekly duties. The research assistant will also be responsible for working in a crew to complete vegetation surveys where quail are tracked to. Proven herbaceous plant identification experience is desired for this position. Additional duties consist of banding, tracking and veg data entry and quality control of those data, equipment maintenance (includes all research equipment and UTVs and sponsor-provided work trucks), and other various duties upon request of supervisors. Incumbent will also have opportunities to interact directly with the grant sponsor. The field technician will often be working with minimal supervision on site, but will report daily to a research professional working on this project. During other times, the field technician will work directly with assisting the research professional. This candidate must be comfortable working independently (even after dark). Housing will be provided. Research assistant will use a sponsor-provided truck or UTV to travel around the research site.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

Technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Knowledge in Wildlife management or closely related field. Interest in game bird management and ecology. Previous telemetry, field research, and computer experience. Understanding of consumptive wildlife management practices. Positive attitude and willing to be a team player. Prior experience working with Northern Bobwhites. Previous experience with radio-telemetry.

Physical Demands

Comfortable working independently. Comfortable working alone after dark. Driving as needed to perform job duties.
