The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) seeks a visionary movement builder and collaborative leader to serve as our next Executive Director. The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing the leadership of a small, growing staff team, commitment to building capacity of community based organizations, and the ability to steward a national organization during a time where voice on behalf of our communities is critical.

About NQAPIA

The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) is the only national organization led by and for LGBTQ+ AANHPI people. NQAPIA serves as a convener of community leaders and groups; prepares leaders to challenge systemic injustices; and advocates for LGBTQ+ AANHPI liberation across the United States and its territories.

Over the past twenty years, NQAPIA has mobilized thousands of LGBTQ+ AANHPI community members to fight for meaningful change. Our local convenings and national conferences bring together hundreds of LGBTQ+ AANHPI leaders from all walks of life to build their skills, sharpen their political acumen, and bridge connections to more effectively drive action. This work has contributed to significant wins in LGBTQ+ protections and racial justice policies locally and across the nation. In recent years, NQAPIA has made major impact during the height of COVID by supporting our local LGBTQ+ AANHPI organizations to build their internal capacity and leadership.

Today, NQAPIA continues to serve as a driving force in building the LGBTQ+ AANHPI national movement through convenings, trainings, and resource development; leadership development and advocacy through national coalitions, state and local support; and solidarity building to work towards the liberation of LGBTQ+ AANHPI communities and individuals.

This twentieth year of NQAPIA marks a year of significant transition. After spending time focusing internally to stabilize operations and programming, including bringing an interim leader on for this transition period, we are eager to bring on our next long-term Executive Director to join the organization with a focus on the holistic health of our organization and our movement.

Job Responsibilities

NQAPIA's Executive Director is responsible for maintaining the organization's day to day operations, setting and executing the vision for the organization, and ensuring that the organization works collaboratively with all partners to build a healthy and powerful LGBTQ+ AANHPI movement.

The ED's day to day responsibilities will include:

Strategic Direction: Setting strategic direction for NQAPIA's programs and advocacy initiatives, including supporting program staff with program development and evaluation, coordination of in person and virtual convenings, and capacity building initiatives to support the network and fiscally sponsored organizations.

People Management: Serves as a people manager for NQAPIA's staff, including providing one-on-one supervision support, leadership development, feedback, and accountability to staff members. Responsible for overseeing people operations systems including hiring of new staff, policy development, and building organizational culture.

Relationship Building: Cultivates and maintains relationships with partners who regularly engage with NQAPIA, including our local member organizations, national coalitions, policymakers, foundations, and individual donors.

Fundraising: Responsible for fundraising to support organization's growth and sustainability, including cultivating relationships with current and new funders. Plans and oversees fundraising events, grant development and oversight, donor cultivation, and develops a fundraising strategy to sustain the organization's $1.2 million budget.

Finance: Responsible for stewardship of the organization's finances and compliance for the organization and fiscal sponsored organizations. Develops annual organizational budget and ensures that NQAPIA's legal obligations, tax reporting, and audit are met on an annual basis.

External Representation: Externally represents the organization, including joining national coalitions and conferences, speaking as panelist and presenter in funder briefings, press engagements, and in policy/ advocacy with local and national elected officials and agency staff.

Organizational Development: Ensures day to day operations of the organization run smoothly, including developing new operations and systems to support NQAPIA's staff, as the organization grows and expands.

Board Development: Works with Board Co- Chairs to coordinate NQAPIA's board of directors, including coordination of annual board retreat, and monthly board meetings.

Required Qualifications and Leadership Traits:

  • Commitment to AANHPI and LGBTQ+ Organizations and Movements: In particular, experience working with those most marginalized in the AANHPI LGBTQ+ umbrella (including, but not limited to, Pacific Islander, Southeast Asian, South Asian, people of transgender experience, women, immigrants and refugees, youth, people with disabilities, and people with limited English proficiency.)
  • Passion for Movement Building: Motivation to create change and dogged persistence to run a growing and dynamic national organization that runs advocacy campaigns with many moving pieces, develops local organizations and leaders, and advances critical programs.
  • Collaborative Leader and Manager: Demonstrated experience with people management, including supervising, developing leadership, and accountability systems for staff members. Has a collaborative leadership style and the ability to delegate while also empowering staff.
  • Fundraising and Resource Development: Strong development experience, including ideally both institutional and individual donor cultivation. Proven success in securing funding from diverse sources, including grants, corporate sponsorships, major gifts, and community fundraising campaigns.
  • External and Interpersonal Communication: Ability to build trust with NQAPIA's staff and grass roots member organizations. A track record of experience with relationship building, coalition, or community organizing work is helpful. Comfort in working with a wide range of stakeholders from grassroots community leaders to funders, the media, and national policy makers.
  • Adaptability: Ability to move the organization through uncertain political terrain, steer the organization through high pressure situations.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Executive Leadership: Experience as an executive leader, ideally in a nonprofit movement organization setting.
  • Financial Management: Previous experience with managing organizational budgets in organizations of a similar size and complexity to NQAPIA.
  • Advocacy: Experience with policy/ advocacy, grassroots organizing and campaigning, in particular, on issues including transgender rights, immigrants' rights, racial justice experience.
  • Conflict Mediation: Experience in mediating conflict in a movement organization setting.
  • Organizational Development: Knowledge of organizational development practices, including navigating transition and change and building organizational culture.

Position Details: This position is a full-time exempt position, with the need for occasional evening and weekend flexibility needed to best work with our local partners. NQAPIA's staff team is a fully remote workplace, and applicants are welcome to work from anywhere within the United States. Regular travel within the U.S. is required for this position. (Currently travel ranges from 4-6 trips per year, but may vary depending on the organization's need and planned annual event calendar.)

Salary and Benefits: The salary range is $130,000-$150,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include comprehensive medical insurance, including dental and vision coverage; a 401(k) retirement match; unlimited sick time; 18 vacation days annually; a monthly cell phone stipend; and other benefits.
