Job DescriptionProvides basic nursing care to patients, and assists in complex nursing care. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.All duties performed are done so in a training situation in which employees are learning the techniques of patient care that are in the basic duties and responsibilities of the Nursing Assistant classification. Works under the direction of a Nurse Manager or registered professional nurse or designee who reviews the work for conformance to established standards.Responsibilities
Assists patients with personal care such as bathing, feeding, hygiene, and use of bedpan or urinal. Provides emotional support to patient as directed and comfort measures including turning, positioning, and backrubs.Monitors and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and weight. Records intake and output.Performs basic nursing procedures such as thermal applications, nonsterile soaks, or application of restraints as directed.Collects, labels and records specimens and delivers same to laboratory. Performs simple tests on patient specimens as directed. Records results.Assists in admitting, discharging and transferring patients. Ambulates patients.Maintains cleanliness of patient-care units, equipment and work areas. Cleans, prepares, and stores supplies.Documents care rendered to patients per Medical Center policy and reports changes in condition or significant signs, symptoms or reactions to supervisor.Access computer/information system for input or retrieval of information.Attends educational/developmental programs as assigned.Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react effectively and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.QualificationsHigh school graduate and/or GED equivalent.Successful completion of a formal nursing assistant or medical assistant training program.Physical and emotional health sufficient to enable employee to perform the normally assigned duties of the position.Ability to read, write, comprehend English and clearly and accurately document activities.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to keep required records and make reports.Ability to maintain an empathetic attitude toward patients and harmonious working relationships with professional and non-professional members of the Medical Center staff.Successful completion of Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS). NOTE: Incumbents will progress to the classification of Nursing Assistant (Level 10) upon successful completon of the HMC six-month (1040 hours) training program.
