Performs complex and varied tasks requiring independent knowledge, its application to a variety of situations, as well as the exercise of independent judgment.Job Results & Essential FunctionCompetent in nursing practice and the nursing processPractices within defined NYS scope of practiceServe as a resource to staff for solving clinical issues.Act as a resource in identifying and/or solving administrative/operational problems and works collaboratively with nursing and ancillary staff to solve problems in a fair, consistent manner.Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to the appropriate manager and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).Works in tandem with the unit managers to identify educational needs and ensures completed the required educationAssists unit manager with disciplinary actions of staff on their assigned shift.Maintains accurate, detailed reports and recordsServes as a role model for nursing employees and promotes excellent clinical care of patients.Demonstrates leadership ability and management skills, including delegating when necessary, along with promoting intra/interdepartmental communication and collaboration.Assess patient care requirements on each unit, by making walking rounds during the shift to monitor patient needs, workflow, and assist as needed.Responds to all emergencies within the facility, (RRT, Codes) and assists as necessary.Promotes educational opportunities with staff and provides assistance to staff in implementing new procedures/protocols.Coordinates transfer of patients within the facility or to another facility as required.Promotes customer/patient satisfaction, sometimes dealing with difficult or emotional situations.Is knowledgeable regarding specific departmental and critical care (emergency) area policies and procedures and their proper implementationObtain supplies from the supply and purchasing department (SPD) as neededCall appropriate employees for OR cases as directedDemonstrates ability to carry out SJH mission, i.e. to provide quality, patient-centered care with an emphasis on physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needsResponsible for understanding and adherence to Standards of Behavior policyIdentify and communicate staff needs for continuing education to the appropriate managerAssist staff to provide a safe work environment for patient care.Assist staff to interpret change in a positive manner.Consistently and independently follows established safety and infection control procedures. Intervenes in unsafe situations.Assist physicians and staff in admission criteria for assigning admission status to patients (observation/admission)Receives admission (inpatient/observation) information, assigns bed, and lets appropriate staff know.Assists ED and Med/Surg manager with staff schedulingAssists case management with completion of UR reviewsMonitor documentation for adherence to Utilization rules and regulationsReport to the administrator-on-call significant incidents and problems such as:Patient/family problems or concernsPhysician concernsMajor damage or utility outagesSecurity/safety concernsUnion activitiesFire/Disaster/bomb threatsMatters of legal importanceCalls received from the Office of Healthcare Quality, Department of Health department, or any other regulatory bodyAdhere to the dress code. Appearance is neat and clean.Complete annual education requirements.Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.Report to work on time and as scheduled.Wear identification while on duty.Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations.Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.Comply with all organizational policies and standards regarding ethical business practices.Communicate the mission, ethics, and goals of the organization.Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.Attend regular staff meetings and in-services.RequirementsEducation & Experience3-5 years of experience and clinical competency in a variety of patient care areas preferred.ED/Critical Care experience is preferred.Ability to manage, lead and supervise the work of nursing personnel.Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.A broad knowledge base of the principles, standards, and methods of professional nursing.A broad knowledge base of the policies and standards of St. James Hospital.Good knowledge of PC operations and software (Word processing, Meditech, and MIDAS/Interqual) are desirable.Licenses and/or CertificationsCurrent license as a Registered Nurse, BSN preferredBasic Life Support (BLS) CertificationAdvanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) CertificationPediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) CertificationMeet the mandatory standard for annual competencies.Physical DemandsAbility to move or transfer patients with an individual effort equal to 35 lbs.
