Job SummaryThe School Food Service Director is responsible for the management and administration of the school district's food service program. This includes ensuring that nutritious and appealing meals are provided to students in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. The director oversees menu planning, budgeting, procurement, staff management, and compliance with health and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Management: Oversee the daily operations of the school food service program, ensuring that meals are nutritious, appealing, and compliant with all applicable regulations. Develop and implement policies and procedures for efficient and effective food service operations.
  • Menu Planning: Plan menus that meet nutritional guidelines and accommodate students' dietary needs and preferences. Ensure menus are varied, appealing, and culturally appropriate. Coordinate with nutritionists and dietitians to ensure balanced meal offerings.
  • Financial Management: Develop and manage the food service program budget, including forecasting expenses and revenues. Monitor financial performance and implement cost-control measures. Ensure accurate financial record-keeping and reporting.
  • Procurement and Inventory Management: Oversee the procurement of food, supplies, and equipment, ensuring quality and cost-effectiveness. Manage inventory to minimize waste and ensure availability of necessary items. Establish and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers.
  • Staff Management: Recruit, train, and supervise food service staff, including cooks, servers, and administrative personnel. Schedule staff shifts and manage labor costs within budgetary guidelines. Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development opportunities for staff.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and sanitation regulations, including local, state, and federal laws. Conduct regular inspections to ensure the kitchen and dining areas are clean and well-maintained. Develop and implement safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Customer Service: Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by addressing student, parent, and staff concerns and feedback. Promote the food service program within the school community, encouraging participation and engagement.
  • Reporting and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of food service operations, including meal counts, inventory, financial transactions, and compliance documentation. Prepare reports for district administration and regulatory agencies as required.
  • Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Service Management, or a related field preferred. Proven experience in food service management, preferably in a school or institutional setting. Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing school food service programs.
  • Skills and Competencies: Strong leadership and management skills. Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in budgeting, financial management, and inventory control. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities.
  • Working Conditions:Work hours typically align with the school calendar, but may require some evenings, weekends, and holidays for special events or administrative duties. The role requires standing for long periods and some lifting and carrying of supplies.
