Through this role, you will be responsible for coordinating disability and religious accommodations to ensure equal access and opportunities for all employees. You will act as a key collaborator with employees and managers on accommodation options, assist employees who are returning from leave, and help the City to continue to develop a culture of accessibility. This position is under the general supervision of the Employee & Labor Relations Manager and frequently partners with other Human Resources staff members to meet the goals and objectives of the position.Are You Looking for a Career with Advancement Potential?Occupational Accommodation Specialist Trainee (18/04)Salary Range: $64,745.98 - $74,663.42If you are hired at the Trainee Level, you will have the opportunity to participate in a trainee program that advances to the Occupational Accommodations Specialist 1 within two (2) years. There is also additional opportunities to advance as there are 3 levels in the Occupational Accommodation Specialist series. Classification level will be determined at the time of hire and will be based on the candidate's relevant work experience and overall qualifications.Occupational Accommodation Specialist 1 (18/06)Salary Range: $68,834.48 - $81,047.46This is the entry level of the Occupational Accommodation Specialist career progression series. This work is characterized by more support, structure, supervision, and mentoring. Under close supervision, employees are expected to exercise professional judgment, uphold confidentiality, as well as establish and maintain positive working relationships throughout the City and use discretion within established parameters.Occupational Accommodation Specialist 2 (18/08)Salary Range: $74,663.42 - $88,600.72This is the objective level of the Occupational Accommodation Specialist career progression series. Employees complete the analysis and resolution of a wide variety of occupational accommodation issues, prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations, and present and defend findings. Examples of Duties and Responsibilities Administer the City of Madison workplace Accommodation Process
  • Manage the entire process of workplace accommodations including but not limited to the initial intake, assessment, reviewing medical information, coordinating the interactive process, accommodations development and implementation as well as job studies and reassignment as needed..
  • Provide support to departments and employees by ensuring consistent application of related federal and state laws.
  • Connect with community partners as needed in order to support employees with disabilities.
  • Support the City's employment program by identifying accommodation needs and strategies in testing, interviewing, and other applicant selection processes.
  • Work with employees with disabilities in identifying strategies that will support their success in the workplace.
  • Perform on-site job coaching to assist workers in meeting job demands.
  • Identify and facilitate the utilization of diverse community resources appropriate to worker needs. Work to match worker abilities and interests with suitable employment to include assisting in career counseling as appropriate.
  • Work with employee requesting religious accommodation for sincerely held religious belief. Meet with employee and manager to assess work requirements. Design accommodations that adhere to legal requirements. Request any documentation as needed.
Coordinating Return to Duty and Fitness for Duty examinations
  • Work with departments to coordinate Fitness for Duty and other special medical/mental exams for employees.
  • Explain the process to employees using plain language and with empathy while respecting confidentiality.
  • Identify proper physicians and communicate work duties and physical/ non-physical requirements.
  • Receive results and provide advice regarding ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Coordinate employees returning from fitness for duties by conducting the interactive process, working with treatment providers, and by working with appropriate supervisors.
  • Monitor employees return to work and follow up as needed.
Work with community agencies to assist employees in the Supported Work Program. This includes providing employment/income verifications, assisting new participants with placements, and acting as a resource for employees in this program.Assist in implementation of benefits and leave programs
  • Provide backup in presenting new employee orientation and resources.
  • Act as a backup for the Leave and Benefits Assistance regarding FMLA and Paid Parental Leave matters.
  • Analyze and report out on employee leave issues, especially in cases where leave falls under multiple federal, state, and local protection categories.
  • Represent Human Resources on the City's worker compensation review committee.
  • Provide consultation as requested to the Disability Rights Commission regarding City efforts to prevent discrimination on the basis of disability relative to City employment and employees.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of federal, state and local legislation as it relates to the employment of the disabled and provide related expertise and consultation to managers and Human Resource Department staff. Keep abreast of changes to city policy, collective bargaining agreements, employee relations process, worker's compensation cases, and other directly/indirectly related topics for any possible impact to accommodation issues. Maintain up to date knowledge of community resources and agencies that can assist applicants and employees with disabilities.
  • Assist with facilitation of city-wide training on accommodations, confidentiality, and other topics related to leave and accessibility.
  • Support the Disability Resource Affinity Group.
  • Assist employees with navigating wage insurance by providing program information.
  • Prepare related reports and analyses; and develop and maintain relevant case management documentation and statistics.
  • Serve as one of the medical record custodians for the City.
  • Perform related work as required
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in performing activities related to: hiring/recruitments, benefits, leave management; non-profit advocacy, legal support, or communication.
In order to qualify for the Occupational Accommodations Specialist 1:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in human resources, business administration, sociology, political science, disability studies, vocational rehabilitation, social work, psychology or a closely related field.
-OR-
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in performing activities related to human resources, vocational rehabilitation, disability advocacy, social work, psychology, or a closely related field.
In order to qualify for the Occupations Accommodations Specialist 2:
  • Four (4) years of related specialized experience performing analytic and/or programmatic work in vocational rehabilitation, occupational health, or human resources.

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, sociology, political science, disability studies, vocational rehabilitation, social work, psychology or a closely related field, AND
  • Two (2) years of related specialized experience performing analytic and/or programmatic work in vocational rehabilitation, occupational health, or human resources.
