Office Aide- Bronx Library CenterDepartment: Branch Libraries Employment Type: Full Time Location: Bronx Library Center Reporting To: Iris Jones Compensation: $38,285 / year DescriptionJob Summary The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. NYPL's neighborhood libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island-many of which date to Andrew Carnegie's visionary philanthropy at the turn of the 20th century-are being transformed into true centers of educational innovation and service, and vital community hubs that provide far more than just free books and materials. The Library is seeking an Office Aide to provide quality customer service to our Library users. This position will be scheduled for 35 hours per week during public service hours.. Responsibilities: Reporting to the Library Manager, the Office Aide:
  • Works as part of a team to provide public service and assist with outreach activities
  • Assists with reserves, inventory, circulation and other related duties
  • Provides assistance to patrons on the use of computers and other technology or software
  • Prepares print and non-print library materials for circulation, involving some data entry at a PC
  • Processes patron applications, including data entry, filing, and related tasks
  • Inspects and sorts print and non-print materials
  • Assists with creating and carrying out improvements to staff procedures and user experience of the Library
  • Performs related duties as required
Required Education, Experience & SkillsRequired Education and Certifications
  • High School diploma or its equivalent
Required Experience
  • Proficiency with Envisionware and Sierra preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer services including on-line searching and Library resources preferred
Required Skills
  • Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse patronage
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Strong computer and other related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs and e-reader devices
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • May temporarily oversee the library in the absence of the Library Manager
