Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, the On-Site Cancer Center Spanish Medical Interpreter provides accurate interpretation and translation of medical information in direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing Pediatric Hematology/Oncology limited English proficient patients and families while adhering to the Code of Ethics for Medical Interpreters and the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care. They are also advocates on behalf of LEP families to ensure that they consistently receive professional language/communication services in healthcare encounters.

Duties of the On-Site Cancer Center Spanish Medical Interpreter include the following but are not limited to:

* Round and educate the patients/families in the Pediatric Hematology Valerie Fund Center on free language assistance services and how to access and correctly use available resources.

* Assist in the education of the Pediatric Hematology Valerie Fund Center staff about language assistance services and how to access and correctly use available resources to ensure effective communication.

* Perform clear, accurate interpreting services for Pediatric Hematology Valerie Fund Center LEP patients, families, and hospital staff in a professional, warm, and friendly manner with the goal of facilitating prompt, unbiased and accurate communication while adhering to the Code of Ethics for Medical Interpreters and the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care.

* Demonstrates a commitment to the mission, vision and values of SBUH.

* Assists in translating general patient/family materials.

* Coordinates interpreter services for all LEP patients of the Pediatric Hematology Valerie Fund Center.

* Keeps self-current by attending professional meetings, webinars and/or continuing education/training sessions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree. At least 3 years of patient facing Medical Interpreter experience in a Hospital or Healthcare setting. Completion of a 40 hour or more Medical Interpreter program (please attached copy of completion paperwork to your submission). Demonstrated fluency and proficiency in both English and Spanish. Demonstrated proficiency in Medical Terminology in English and Spanish. Must be a good fit with a positive mindset.

Preferred Qualifications: Certified Medical Interpreter certification. Working knowledge of regulatory guidelines.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

* Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*

* Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.

* Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*

* Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.

* Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

* The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $68,666 - $80,111 / year.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all UUP positions have an additional $3,400 for location,
