Job SummaryHours: 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., 30 minute lunch breakJob Description / Essential Elements: ONE - ON - ONE INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE (Special Education) CLASSIFICATION: Classified Employee SALARY: Classified Salary Schedule, Range 10 DEFINITION Under general supervision to perform paraprofessional instructional activities and assist in the educational program for a specific pupil with exceptional needs; to monitor a specific pupil (as assigned) at all times on campus; to guide specific pupil in socially accepted guidelines of behavior; to receive training related to a specific student's disability and best practices to assist student; to assist in the provision of intensified learning experience for a specific pupil with special needs as determined appropriate and to do related work as required/needed. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS To perform a job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Essential Duties: •Assists the Special Education teacher in implementation of the IEP for a specific student with special needs through the instructional program and a one-on-one program. •Assists in educating a specifically assigned student with special needs. •Is primarily responsible to monitor behavior and interaction of a specifically assigned student with special needs throughout the assigned hours and never leaves the student unattended during these hours. •Is the primary adult to instruct the specific special needs student on appropriate behavior and guidelines for acceptable social interaction. •Is the primary person responsible to ensure that the specific student with special needs is not allowed to put themselves in situations that are dangerous or that might endanger other children on campus. •Assists teachers and program coordinators with the presentation of learning materials by tutoring the specifically assigned student with special needs. •Monitors achievement but does not grade the student. •Administers and scores tests and activities. •Assists in preparing record keeping materials and curriculum. •Maintains a record log on the assigned student with special needs. •Maintains a contact log for parent communications related to the assigned student with special needs. •Assists in the preparation of materials, tests and curriculum. •Schedules and attends parent and teacher conferences as prescribed by the teacher or supervisor. Essential Duties: (cont'd) •Maintains confidentiality with regard to student records and information. •Demonstrate sensitivity, compassion and patience with the assigned student with special needs. •Maintain a positive attitude and reinforce the assigned students' improvements by assisting student to develop appropriate work habits, attitudes and behaviors. •Depending on assignment provides specialized health care procedures as outlined by State regulations. •Give complete supervision of the assigned student with special needs for the entire assignment time period. •Assists with home visits to relate information to parents and assist student. •Schedule meetings and appointments as assigned. •Makes phone calls to the parents when deemed appropriate. •Assists with filing all yearly reports and three-year evaluations related to the assigned student with special needs. •Translates records, reports, and parent conferences and assists to interpret the rights of the parent as specified in regulations. Other Duties: •Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Principal. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone and business machines; vision sufficient to read printed materials; hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold telephone conversations; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distances on the telephone and addressing groups; physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead; physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school site to site), drive an automobile, and to respond to emergency situations; physical strength sufficient to lift 30 pounds alone or more with assistance; physical stamina sufficient to sit for prolonged periods of time; physical tolerance to dust; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: •Education equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade. •One or more years of working with students with special needs is desirable. •Any combination of training and experience in the specific students disability that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities, including demonstrated experience in successfully working with students in learning situations. •Possesses a High School diploma or a GED certificate. Possesses an AA degree, 2 years of higher education, or pass District competency exam. •Must be willing to attend specialized training related to the assigned students specific disability or condition. •Bilingual skills in English & designated language. Knowledge of: •Techniques of student supervision. •English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. •Basic office methods and equipment (phone, fax, etc.) Ability to: •Learn district policies, procedures, regulations and resources. •Use technology and computer software applications appropriate to the work environment. •Communicate effectively in English and designated language. •Understand and carry out oral and written directions without immediate supervision. •Meet schedules and time lines. •Prepare and maintain accurate records. •Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with pupils, staff and parents.
