At the Virginia Department of Transportation, we have something for you.VDOT's South Hill Residency is excited to announce they are seeking an experienced Operator Sign to work with in South Hill. In this position, you will install, maintain and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, lane closures, etc., in assigned areas using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Install new signs and posts on roadways; repair or replace damaged signs and posts; remove signs from roadways as needed. This position requires knowledge of general carpentry sufficient to install, maintain and repair roadway signs and posts. Knowledge and application of work zone safety, traffic controls and flagging operations. This position will participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects, maintain inventory records and complete simple paperwork. If you are a Veteran or Virginia National Guard Member, we urge you to respond accordingly on your state application.We have Shared Values and a Code of Ethics: your success in our organization depends upon modeling these values, therefore please access the following link: to review them and, if in agreement, we welcome you to apply.Minimum Qualifications* Ability to perform heavy manual labor.* Skill in mathematics used in carpentry and calculating distance.* Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations.* Ability to maintain records and complete simple paperwork.* Valid driver's license.* Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy duty equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations.* Skill in general carpentry.* Safety shoes required.* Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.Additional Considerations* Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety.* Inventory experience.* Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator.* Experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repair.* CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course.* Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the MUTCD or similar regulations.Special InstructionsPosition is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
