  • Assess the abilities of visually impaired individuals to travel independently in their homes and communities and make recommendations to meet the training needs of the individual.
  • Instruct clients how to move confidently, safely, and independently in any environment.
  • Travels to locations locally and across the State of Louisiana to provide onsite O&M assessment and training.
  • Provide O&M training to a specialty population of children, adults, and older blind individuals with low vision or blindness and other disabilities across all service programs.
  • Organize and implement group outings in collaboration with other department instructors.
  • Develop and revise curricula as needed to ensure O&M instruction remains relevant to contemporary living and working situations.
  • Partners with the Human Resources department to schedule quarterly orientation sessions with new blind/visually impaired (B/VI) employees to assess and train on any identified O&M need(s).
  • Coordinates and executes quarterly O&M training for internal employees, as needed.
  • Work with O&M interns to provide diverse experiences in the field.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Data Collection:
  • Maintain records that reflect client services: Evaluation, treatment, all communication regarding the client and their services and equipment, and any additional correspondence or billing with established documentation procedure.
  • Assist with resolution of problems with clients and maintain written documentation.
  • Complete reports and other documentation within the required timeframe
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in rehabilitation science, kinesiology, or related field.
  • Certification in O&M instruction, or a willingness to obtain a certification within a specified period.
  • Demonstrated track record in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel and Word).
  • Strong communications, team-building, strategic, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability and desire to work with people who are blind and/or disabled.
  • If sighted, a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and proof of current auto insurance.
  • Day and some overnight travel are required to perform the duties of this position.
