Purpose

Job Description

Under the direct supervision of a professional nurse, performs nursing procedures of a sub-professional nature to the maternal child health clients and families. Gives assistance to the surgical team in the performance of surgery and the delivery of post-operative nursing care to obstetrical clientele.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assists the professional nurse in giving care to patients received in obstetrical units.
  • Prepares patients for examination. Assists MD with examination of patient in triage/labor rooms.
  • Takes temperatures, pulse, respiration and blood pressure, test and records, urine for sugar, ketones, and albumin. Measures fluid intake and output, collect specimen and gives perineal care. Document on vital sign flow sheet and intake output sheet.
  • Prepares operating room for surgery, ensuring that all equipment is in working condition.
  • Cares for instruments, cultures, specimen, and performs surgical scrub.
  • Decontaminate instruments and thoroughly cleans units OR & Del. Areas.
  • Maintain surgical aseptic techniques and universal precautions at all times.
  • Assists in the transporting of patients to and from the operating room and LDR's when necessary.
  • Replenishes supplies in rooms and prepares all instruments for sterilization.
  • Participates in on-service education and obstetrical conference as assigned.
  • Perform the duties of a Nurse Aide/Assistant when so assigned.
  • Notifies charge nurse of any situations/hazards.
  • Does quality control tests for urine and notifies charge nurse of any out of range results.
  • Rotates to other MCH units when needed.
  • Carries out infection control protocol. Participates in performance improvement and TJC activities.
  • Provide age appropriate care to newborn, infant, toddler, pre-schooler, school-age, adolescent, young and middle age adults within the WCHS units

Minimum Qualifications

  • Documented designation of Grandfathered status as a Surgical Technologist; or
  • Completion of an appropriate training program for Surgical Technologists in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; or
  • Service in the federal government to the extent that the individual performed duties related to the practice of Surgical Technology.

Surgical Technologist - Level II

  • Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or
  • Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists or successful completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization other than the NBSTSA, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
