Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a
Package Delivery Driver to join the team.This is a physical, fast-paced, position that involves continual entering and exiting of vehicles, lifting, lowering, and carrying packages that typically weigh 25- 35 lbs and may weigh up to 50 lbs. Ability to make between 50-150 stops per day utilizing a handheld scanner to track the deliveries. Drive on hilly terrain with narrow roads and tight turns on the Berkeley Lab site.Vehicles utilized for deliveries include driving medium-sized package vans and acting as lumper/loader on liftgate trucks. Specialized equipment utilized includes pallet jacks, hand carts, and forklifts. The incumbent is required to practice a strong commitment to safety and possess a DOT Hazmat certification. A minimum of a Class B license is required with HazMat and airbrake endorsements.
What is Required: - At a minimum possess a Class B California Commercial Driver's license, WITH HazMat and airbrake endorsements, and current medical card.
- Equivalent to one year of paid or regularly assigned package delivery driving experience in a job.
- Package Delivery Drivers must have excellent customer service, communication, and driving skills.
- Ability to comply with and maintain compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
- Knowledge of applicable State and Federal vehicle codes and transport laws governing the vehicle operated, load carried, and driver responsibilities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the rules of safe driving and the provisions of the State of California Vehicle Code pertaining to operation of vehicles described in the appropriate class (a 2-axle vehicle).
- Demonstrated experience and ability to operate medium size package vans, liftgate trucks (2-axle vehicles), and forklifts (5 tons maximum weight capacity) and obtain forklift operator certification upon hire.
- Ability to walk, lift (up to 50lb), carry, push, and pull; climb, stoop, and crouch; reach, handle, and use fingers; speak, hear and see.
- Ability to load and unload materials of varying types and sizes utilizing a forklift (if necessary) having a carrying capacity of up to five tons.
- Demonstrated ability to operate specified vehicles in unusual traffic conditions, including hilly terrain, narrow roadways, backing, etc.
- Demonstrated experience with cargo handling and documentation procedures.
- Expertise in all areas of equipment tie down and proper weight distribution.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in pre-trip preparation and vehicle inspection procedures.
- Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently or in teams on assignments, develop own work methods and procedures, use initiative and judgment, and make decisions within scope of work.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and willingness to work in a flexible, changing work environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with team members and customers and to function well in a team environment.
- Able to follow processes, procedures, and policies.
Desired Qualifications: - Basic knowledge of computers.
- May be required to possess a Q Clearance for handling classified documents and access to DOE and LLNL.
- Familiarity with all LBNL onsite and remote delivery locations, DOT safety standards, Property Management system, iBox Barcode System, and tying down equipment loads.
Notes: - This is a full-time, 6-month, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to a Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
- The Shift hours are 7am - 3:30pm.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- The full hourly range for this position is $26.23 - $38.96/hour for the job classification of 745.1. Salary for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate's qualifications and relevant experience in accordance with the union contract agreement).
