Requirements **MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS**: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, completion of a trade school or apprenticeship program in painting, and a minimum of one year journeyman level painting experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

**SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS**: Must possess a valid drivers license from state of residence.

**ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK**:

Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices of the painter's trade.

Good knowledge of a variety of types and brands of paint, lacquers, enamels, removers, finishes and of their properties and applications.

Good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions for this trade.

Ability to mix, match and apply paints and other finishes by brush, spray and roller.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to use paint brushes, spray guns and rollers.

Ability to work from scaffolding and ladders and in awkward positions for long periods of time.

Ability to supervise the work of trainees and helpers.

Ability to keep records and make reports.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Description **EXAMPLES OF WORK**: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)

Paints interior and exterior of buildings, using brush, roller or spray.

Mixes and matches paints and stains using proper proportion of pigment, base and thinner.

Prepares walls and surfaces for painting by washing, dusting, puttying, caulking and removing old paint or finish by scraping, burning, sandblasting, or sandpapering.

Paints, stains, varnishes, enamels, lacquers and calcimines wood, metal, fiberboard, plaster, wallboard, brick, cement, canvas or other types of walls, floors, ceilings, furniture and fixtures; repairs and installs sheetrock.

Estimates material needs; removes or installs textured ceilings.

Letters or stripes with a brush or paint sprayer.

Cleans up area when painting assignments are completed.

Cleans and maintains brushes, spray guns and other equipment.

Works from ladders or scaffolding.

May occasionally do work in related building trades.

Performs related work as required.

Important Information **DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK**: An employee in this class is responsible for preparing and painting a variety of surfaces. Work is performed in accordance with accepted practices for this trade under the general supervision of a Painter Supervisor or other superior. Considerable independence of action is allowed in completing assignments. Supervision is exercised over trainees or other helpers as assigned. A Painter must lift items weighing over 40 pounds.
